CAREFUL ON WHAT VERSION YOU BUY

NOTE: ALL THIS APPLIES TO THE DOWNLOADABLE OR CD VERSIONS. THE ONLINE PAID VERSION OF DELUXE APPEARS NOT TO HAVE SCHEDULE C

Block is doing some shady marketing to push people to the more expensive versions they may not need. Basically ignore the comparison chart go to the version page and see what forms it supports for the true picture. If it has all the forms listed you need, it will do your taxes. . See below for more detailed explanation.

Every year we get good intentioned members here on SD that do not understand this recommending higher versions based on the chart. It costs other members unnecessary expense
Lot of misinformation on what version will do what bouncing around and I hope I can clear it up a little.

H&R Black is doing a little semi shady marketing to try to get you to get use a higher level version. The Chart comparing versions is almost worthless. Forget the chart they show, instead on the version comparison chart page, click on the different versions and see the supported forms link to get a true picture of what each version will handle. If it supports the forms you need it will work for you. The higher versions may add some feature or guidance that they stress in the chart. The chart makes it appear you may need the next higher version when you don't.

A good example of this is that the chart is causing the confusion and makes it seem Deluxe will not do Schedule C or self employment income.

From the chart for the Premium version this is checked.
Quote :
Maximize deductions for self-employment income (Schedule C)
This feature is unchecked on the chart for Deluxe.

This makes it appear that Deluxe does't do Schedule C and Premium does. Not true, it is just an added feature that will make it easier for you to find deductions supposedly. May be another interview section, or ask you some questions along the line of did you spend anything on this type of expense. It's generally not very useful, if you have any idea of what your deductions are, the Deluxe Schedule C walk-through is included and will guide you right through.

From the supported forms page. for the Deluxe version we see it does do Schedule C
  • Form 1040 Individual Income Tax Return
  • Form W-2 Wage and Tax Statement
  • Form 1098 Mortgage Interest Statement
  • Form 1098-E Student Loan Interest
  • Form 1098-T Tuition Payment

  • Schedule D Capital Gains and Losses
  • Schedule EIC Earned Income Credit
  • Schedule SE Self-Employment Tax
  • Schedule 8812 Additional Child Tax Credit
NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE FULL LIST. See below for the FULL LIST

Schedule C is handled fine by Deluxe

Deluxe works fine for me. I itemize, am self employed and file a Schedule C, wife receives a W2 from her company, have capital gains, IRA, SEP 401K, stocks etc. In other words a fairly complicated return and Deluxe handles my situation.

Here is the full list of supported forms and you will see that unless you have a very complicated return or some obscure form that is needed Deluxe will most likely work for you. Don't fall for shady marketing and save some money.

I prefer TurboTax. It's more detailed for people not tax savvy. It holds your hand while walking you thru the process a bit better. This is good for people who have some experience doing their tax. Just my opinion.

NICE!
Just bought it and the deal is from Newegg.
I was just about to buy one from some other site.
*Newegg threw in some free software too.* I can always give those freebies to family members who won't flip a dime toward computer security and always complaining about how slow the computer is. (Bot nets need love too, I guess)

Amazon is cheaper on premium + state. And buy there for 5% bonus refund via Amazon gc.
Nevermind. Missed the coupon code

Does the Newegg purchase require immediate download or do they send a link and code where download can be delayed a month?

Same question, and does anybody think Amazon will match soon?

Amazon does not match.

Went ahead and bought, this is a solid deal. The past few years I've noticed that right around $30 is the best deal you'll get for Premium. I believe the last time I was able to actually get it in the $20s was like 3 years ago. Thanks OP.

As you remember, NewEgg had a promotional gift card for a purchase over $100 and get $50 back, well I got it and thinking that it's a gift card never expires. I want to buy something today and it's already expired. Any solution how to redeem it? TIA.

Curious, why do some of you download software to your PC for tax preparation? Is it easier than going web-based? I've never had trouble with HR Block online. But now that I've done Credit Karma twice and it's completely free I don't think I'll go back to HR Block.
The download runs on your system so you don't have to share computer time with a million other users and constantly get kicked out if you take too long between mouse clicks. Also, everything just loads quicker. You can go get a drink and come back and everything's as you left it. It works better for people who have a lot of details to enter.

My thought exactly, at the end last year I had to pay $20 to file my state return. I remember that some tax software used to include that years ago...Taxact for example. Is that something no longer included with any Tax software...the E-file I mean?
I don't think I've ever gotten a free state e-file with H&R Block. So, I just print and mail the paper return instead. It hasn't been a big deal for me, and you're less likely to be audited when you send paper returns anyway (not something I'm super worried about, but it's a nice perk).

Absolutely agree — I've watched Premium closely for years and $30 is basically the floor. I don't even care about Amazon's 5% bonus, it's only good on Federal. Any refund I get is from the state.

And I've also never seen a free state e-file. People always talk about it, but 12 years with H&R and that's a unicorn to me. Some states allow proprietary free e-file, so YMMV.

I will wait to see if they will have a deal to include a GC instead of the internet security software. Last year, I got on a similar 50% off deal but with a $15 GC included:

How did you get it down to $16.02 for the Deluxe? I thought it was $20 (before tax) after the 50% discount.

NVM - you got the other version of the Deluxe.
