What's so hard to understand. It is a completely different product, in a completely different form, so serve a completely different purpose. All packaged in a well thought out design.

I own the 8" version, and as stated it's great for video calls. Not only do you not have to physically hold a phone or tablet, or sit it on a non-integrated stand, the mic and sound quality are significantly improved.

Other convenience features:
- Speaker: Music (Significantly better quality than phone or tablet, no pairing)
- Smart Digital Photo frame: Wife and I have past 10years of photos streaming and auto-updated based on faces we choose. Great feature.
- Far field microphone: Does not exist on phone/tablet
- Recipes
- Youtube: hands-off, in a sleek/sturdy form factor

Let's be honest, none of this gadgets are needs. It's the convenience that determines whether or not it's of value to you. Every tablet I've owned, I ended up returning. This, I've enjoyed for 2-months so far, think it will become a favorite kitchen gadget.

You are absolutely right to a point, hell my phone can replicate most of the features as well. That being said there are absolutely good reasons to have these if you have a need for htem. We have four total lenovo smart displays and a handful of google mini's in our house. The majority of our home is on Smart Lighting (RGB or just White) and so almost every room of our house can be voice controlled. For the wife and I obviously we can just use our phones, but our kids can also use the displays as can a guest.

Beyond smart lighting we also have an ARLO camera system covering the entire property, we can easily check the cameras from this play or just watch the kids playing in the backyard while we cook or use the kitchen.

The cooking directions and recipe stuff is fantastic. Being able to stand in the fridge and verbally create/add to a shopping list is awesome.

They make amazing photo displays and for us, thats huge.

There are dozens of reasons that for the right people these smart displays are awesome. And there's also just as many folks who are perfectly content to use their phone, existing tablet, etc.

But don't kid yourself that these aren't amazing devices for folks that want to use them or that a tablet is a perfect substitute because it isn't.

Been looking for a deal for this for my mother-in-law with a disability, mostly for easy video chat, she already uses a Google home mini any thoughts?

I got my parents the 8" one for Christmas. It only works with Duo for video calls. They were use to using Duo on their phones, but they like using the video call on this because they can be sitting at the bar and have both of them in frame easily.

no battery, don't understand why people spend more money on these than a $50 tablet that would have the same functionality and be portable

nope, it wasn't, that was the 8'' version... which was actually on sale around the holidays for 75$.

better microphone setup
better speakers
don't have to worry about apps and whatnot, what's there is there and built for it
everything is made to function hands free
don't have to worry about it "leaving" the room and not being returned

functionally, what it's made for, it's better at... these aren't meant to be an all in one, it's a purpose built device. they're fantastic in the kitchen, and maybe in the bedroom, but they're of little utility in the bedroom... a kitchen display/interface is great.

fwiw...
i had a 8'' tablet in the kitchen for a year before my Echo Show, and now Lenovo Display. it's such a cumbersome interface that the tablet is almost useless in comparison in that setting.

for others thinking about buying this for an elderly parent for video calling, my own experience is that my mom is a bit too old to use this. she gets the whole video chat element and can even command the smart display to try and call me. but eventually the smart display seems to require a relinking to a mobile phone with google duo on it. so if your elderly parent can't use google duo on their own smart phone, maybe consider the video chat may not work perfectly for that parent.
one day, i hope they update the firmware to allow for easier video calls that are not so smartphone/duo depedent.

that being said, we are keeping this. at $150 +costco warranty/return it's one of the best quality digital frames you can expect. (they are surprisingly expensive on amazon.) i link it to a shared album of the family with updated photos--and she sees photos within seconds of us taking the shot.

That's odd. I've personally had one for a few months and haven't had to re-add to Google Home or re-add my phone number. My parents haven't had any issues since Christmas either.

Funny, I do the same thing. I set the default album and then shared it with myself so I can add pictures of the grandkids myself. Parents get a nice new rotation of pictures without doing anything.

I'll try to relink it on my next visit and see if we can get it working without interruption. thanks!
