The article I referenced clearly explains that there are THREE different generations of Thunderbolt, just because they can use the same USB-C connector, does NOT MEAN THEY ARE THUNDERBOLT 3.

Thunderbolt 3 is Gen 3 and the latest/fastest. Eff off, because you don't know what you're talking about. You're the troll confusing everyone. My OP was clear, concise, and CORRECT.

Bottom line: this laptop does NOT have Thunderbolt 3. PERIOD!

Thunderbolt 3 denotes GEN 3; that's why it's called Thunderbolt 3, troll.

Since there is still some activity here I'll chime in an provide some clarification.

USB C is a connector, not a standard, it does not by itself denote what kind of protocol runs over it. USB C can be wired as any of the following

USB 2 (480 mbps)
USB 3 / 3.1 Gen 1 (5 gbps)
USB 3.1 / 3.1 Gen 2 (10 gbps)
Thunderbolt 3

It can also support alternative modes, meaning that a display out can be used such as USB C to HDMI or Display Port.

Thunderbolt is an Intel designed protocol that allows (more or less) direct access to the PCI-E lanes of a computer. This allows low latency, high bandwidth access to devices such as external graphics card, RAID arrays, etc. Thunderbolt 3 is the 3rd generation and uses the USB C connector. The previous 2 used the Mini Display Port connector and were generally found on Macs. Thunderbolt 3 also has a few flavors, such as X2 and X4, denoting the number of PCI-E lanes that the port has access to. 4 has more lanes so is faster and more desirable than 2.

As far as this laptop is concerned, "USB 3.1 Type C (Gen 1)" would denote that it's a USB 3.1 Gen 1 port AKA USB 3.0 (they changed the naming in the spec...). It can do 5 gbps and DOES NOT support thunderbolt.

Be aware of the above while shopping to not be disappointed. Hopefully this clears things up.

All that info and didn't even mention that it has 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM

Great deal for anyone in the market.

Like my Asus laptop (mid-range U57A), five years old--lots of use, still going strong. Upgraded to 2.5" SSD and it's like a new machine!

And it looks similar to this with some nice upgrades (backlit keyboard, 16gb RAM, SSD, etc.

CON: lack of a thunderbolt 3 port... Personally, I wouldn't buy any new computer without one, but that's just one man's opinion...

It does have one lol.

1x USB 3.1 Type C (Gen 1)

Gen 1

I would only consider a unit with THUNDERBOLT 3, as I previously stated.

I make plenty of mistakes, but I don't need to be corrected when I don't...

Instead of yelling at each other maybe you should spend 16 seconds Googling for your answer.

This laptop does not have Thunderbolt 3. Most budget laptops don't have it though so if you're shopping in this price range you shouldn't be expecting it.
