The main benefit of the adaptors is to connect multiple controllers. Only one can be connected via bluetooth.

This is incorrect I've had 4 Xbox one s controllers connected over bluetooth, we were able to use them for 4 play super smash bros CEMU emulator.

That's not true at all. You can connect as many as you want over Bluetooth. That said, the adapter has good hardware that allows you to connect a few controllers with low latency, whereas not all Bluetooth adapters can do that well. Essentially, with the adapter, you know you'll have a good experience, whereas that's not guaranteed with Bluetooth.

any $2 bluetooth adapter will work if you have the newer xbox one controller, do a search on how to differentiate

Yeah really dumb that made it to where older controllers won't connect without adapter.

That's true. This has bluetooth.
Out of the box, a regular s controller with BT doesn't need an adapter on a mac. Only windows 10.

How do we tell whether it's a new controller or older version?

Another benefit of this is the usb stick has a button on it for manual pairing/syncing without having to fiddle with pc bluetooth settings.

You can connect those with a micro USB cable. Plus side you don't need the AA batteries. Downside you are tethered to however long the cable is. Worked for me before the wireless adapter came out.

Also be aware that the new "slim" Wireless Adapter (the v2, more like a dongle than a USB stick) doesn't work on Win 7 or 8.1.

Edit: the second version of the XB1 adapter has part number 6HN-00002.

The description on Amazon says it comes with the new slim adapter but the pictures show both the new and old thicker one. Anyone know which one will be shipped?

If it matters to anyone here, I've done extensive testing among multiple Bluetooth adapters and both the V1 and V2 of this, and the actual adapters from Microsoft are a bit more reliable than multiple Bluetooth adapters that I've tried.

How's the crosspad on these?

I've been using a DS4 with DS4Windows to emulate a 360 controller for a while, but now that I have a PS4, I might actually like to use that as a second controller. I've heard good things about the updated design of the Xbox ONE controllers, so I'm tempted, especially if this can use the mini Bluetooth dongle I already have.
