Not sure how this could be considered "clunky". Specifics would be appreciated. I have a similar drive a 4TB WD Easystore connected to my computer and have used similar drives on consoles as well.

As long the drive is 'portable' and USB powered, not requiring a separate power supply, is sufficiently large in capacity and reliable you should be good to go. I've had mixed results with WD Eastystores in terms of reliability, however your results will likely vary.

The Seagate Backup Plus, in spite of being branded a Seagate, which I believe is usually made by Samsung internally, is one of the more popular and reliable drives for console usage.

Either of the two should be sufficient for that purpose.

Unplug these when not in use with the Xbox One's. Even when the console is powered down, these will spin and generate some heat. Unnecessary wear and tear.

Just the thing I'm looking for after Nintendo bow down to OneChina and eliminated Taiwan from the Firmware. To the Usenet!
