I never flew on plane before, I'm in the market for something like this and I know they go by size and weight when traveling.

My question is I will be traveling from Chicago to MSP and I would like not to get charged more for having a luggage bag that's to big+ I'm a big and tall guy =heavy clothes.

Should I go with 28" or 24" ?
Will be for 3 to 5 day travels ..

I believe 20" is the only one that can be used as a carry on for most airlines. The other sizes are too big and will have to be checked.

Look up for the airline what your size and weight limits are for carry on and checked bags (if checked bags are even included in most tickets, we haven't flown domestic destinations in awhile and you do get checked bags for overseas, don't know if most airlines still do for domestic flights). If you only can do carry on, you probably can only use the 20". Knowing what parameters you need to hit makes all the difference. You can buy luggage scales too, to help you get it right.

Also, if this is your first time flying and you don't plan to do it much, I don't think I'd invest in one pricey bag. You can get a whole set of softside bags for not much more than the price of just one of these 28" bags if you look around, and I prefer the soft bags. My husband likes these hardsided ones, even though one he took on a trip got destroyed by the airline, just crushed up like it was hit with a forklift. I'm on the lookout for a decent replacement.

I do conferences on a standard 20' carry-on bag all the time. If you're not going to a place that needs a lot of extra winter gear you should be fine

Yes it's fine. I can do 5 day trip with it so 3 day I'd say it's no problem.
