These are open back headphones, so they do have quite a bit of sound leakage. Not many reviews on them, but the price is great for them!

Link [monoprice.com]

Also available are the Monoprice M300 [monoprice.com] In-ear planars for $79.00 (open box) + FS

Both have free shipping, so any small item added to them should also ship free. Good time to pick up cables and such that don't ship free.

Edit: I further treated myself and bought this [amazon.com] amp, which also seems to be a pretty good deal at $36 warehouse

Tldr; Planar magnetic headphones use an oscillating film, suspended between two *planes* of magnets. This design as opposed to a cylindrical coil moving linearly around a magnet, connected to a cone. The planar magnetic design has better response time, because of it's lower bulk (no large coil, no big cone to move). The downside is it's lacking ability to produce "punchy" bass.

Hopefully this helps someone, I had to read over that article a few times to grasp the concept 😅

The HE4XX are an amazing set of headphones for the price. If the price isn't a stumbling point, I don't think you'll be disappointed. I love mine to the point where a second pair is tempting to keep at work.

These M565 are still tempting to try out for this price. Some of the reviews on head-fi say they are very, very dark (basically, falloff from mid and then anemic treble). Some other reviews say they're very balanced. There's speculation that there's actual variance between units.

There are some indications that changing the pads to velour and angled may help (see here [head-fi.org], and towards the end of that thread).

Most people did seem to agree, of the reviews I could find when I was trying to decide on whether to get the HE4XX or not, that these M565 are straight up inferior to the M1060 (but that's also a steep price difference, especially at this price). The same thing seemed to be the consensus when I was hunting comparisons between these and the HE4XX. Most people seemed to feel the HE400i certainly edged out the M565 (of the people who thought the M565 didn't sound overly dark: the ones who thought the M565 sounded overly dark all seemed uniform on thinking the HE400i was far superior). I don't remember finding any direct comparisons with the HE4XX, and where the HE4XX sits versus the HE400i seems to be a complicated topic with varying preferences.

This is a really good price, if I didn't have a HE4XX set I'd probably jump on it personally, just be aware that you'll almost undoubtedly want to purchase new pads for these, so that's probably another ~$20-30 for good ones.

Also monoprice is hit and miss on support for open box/refurb, in my experience. I bought an MP Mini Select and if I didn't know what I was doing would have been in trouble: the extruder stepper motor needed replacing, and the extruder base plastic was cracked. They never even got back to me on sending replacement parts/etc. Presumably returning it would have worked out, but I really didn't want to deal with that when it was fixable.

Price seems almost too good to be true, but I guess it is. Heckuva deal.

god this is so tempting, i've always wanted to try some planars. But I've been told to go with the hifiman massdrop offering over these, because the m565 would be a disappointing sidegrade at best from the dynamic driver headphones I've already got.

I primarly listen to mp3's. I hear you shouldn't bother buying expensive headphones unless you listen to everything in FLAC. is that true?

Those in ear ones look hilarious. What's the point. Can anyone comment on these? How well do they sit for extended listening sessions?

Not completely true. Most new music sounds fine in MP3. Good headphones allow you to hear the quality of the recording. Once you can perceive the difference in recording quality, then yes you might want to upgrade your music to FLAC. But you should start with better headphones so that you can hear for yourself.
