One of the lowest prices this has been in a while. Looks like a number of the rulebooks are also on sale close to their lowest prices in a while as well:

Players Handbook is $22.74 shipped : https://www.amazon.com/Players-Ha...0786965606

Xanathar's Guide to Everything is $20.74 shipped: https://www.amazon.com/Xanathars-...0786966114

DM's Guide is $20.94 shipped : https://www.amazon.com/Dungeons-D...0786965622

For those who really want the best value, the Starter Kit (primarily for the dice and module) plus the free basic rules PDF is all you'll need to get started. Use the quick-start rules in the starter kit if you've never played, and then graduate to the free basic rule set which is effectively a slim version of the full Players Handbook, Monster Manual and DM guide:

"The Basic Rules runs from levels 1 to 20 and covers the cleric, fighter, rogue, and wizard, presenting what we view as the essential subclass for each. It also provides the dwarf, elf, halfling, and human as race options; in addition, the rules contain 120 spells, 5 backgrounds, and character sheets. But the best part? The Basic Rules is a free PDF. Anyone can download it from our website. We want to put D&D in as many hands as possible, and a free, digital file is the best way to do that."

... aside from the significant number of women who play and DM the game at local game stores and various online Twitch streams, Youtube channels, etc... You should crawl out from under your rock more often.

Back in HS and college, before the Internet, this provided ages of fun! Thanks for the memories!

Would anyone recommend for someone who's never played d&d before as a good way to get into it? I've always wanted to try but never had a group of willing friends

Look for a nearby game store. They frequently know the groups that play their various games.

Looks like the $5 book no rush credit from buying an Echo device over the holidays applies to this at Amazon. Might buy this and put it away for a couple years until my kid's the right age.

I've been running a game for my son and several kids. It's great, and will last several sessions. Very high value: http://piaw.blogspot.com/2018/04/...on-5e.html

Absolutely! A steal at the price it gives basic/starter instructions and everything you needed to get started with the 5th edition. The included dungeon scenario is not significant but gives a good idea how to start and play.

Glorious memories of half understood rules patched together by elementary school DM's from rule books across several 'versions.'

You might enjoy this.

Do I need more than one? Like if I can get a group of four newbies, will one book be enough for all of us? Or should i get a book per person playing? TIA

I literally just used this kit yesterday for first play through. You only need 1 kit for a group, although my main recommendation is to get more dice sets to play with. The kit only comes with 1, and in reality every player (and the DM) should have at least 1 dice set. It would be tough to constantly be passing the dice around.

The kit comes with everything else you need.
- Basic rule book for starting (not the full book but a good overview)
- The DM campaign book to run the game (should not be reviewed by all, only the person running things)
- Pre-created character sheets (enough for 5 people)
- 1 set of 7 dice
