Newbie laptop ripper-aparter here, have an old Toshiba i3 laptop now...

So I could get the Kngston SSD from this thread for $18 and that would be a good option to make this Dell boot up much faster? Is this a real PITA or any Joe Blow could figure it out?

EDIT: Actually, I see this one is the wrong size. I need to find a SSD that has M.2

Thanks for any help!

Read a really in-depth, not-so-positive review of this. Think I'll be passing.

Where can I find this deal?
It's expired. I was lucky enough to get it so I could type this out on it. But the deal happened and was live for quite some time so it will come back. I'd pass on this deal. The lenovo is very speedy but is traded for short battery life.

Hmm, how much of a pain would it be to spend another $50-75 for a M.2 SSD and then move Windows on to the SSD? Because that would be ideal, getting all the speed for booting and Windows swap file, but still having 1TB of HDD storage for movies, music, photos and videos.
I did that on the super cheap Walmart Lenovo 330 deal. $50 for 8gb of ram, $60 for a 500gb crucial ssd, a $15 optical drive bay adapter and $25 for an external optical DVD.

Download Macrium Reflect if the ssd doesn't come with a migration app. You will spend maybe 15 min putting the new drive in, another 10m setting up macrium (always remember to move the uefi partition) and then however long it takes your old spinny disk to push out data. Odds are your ssd will tick along at 10% utilization while the disk is at 98% utilization.

Reboot, get to the bios to change boot order and you're done. Mostly. You should go turn off prefetching and some indexing services that are redundant with an SSD, make sure trim is enabled, etc. Google "optimize windows for ssd".

I would not go cleaning off the old hdd though. If an electronic device is going to fail early, odds are it will happen in the first 90 days. After that it probably won't fail for a couple of years. If you use Dropbox/box/gdrive/OneDrive/etc you should be fine, if not set up something to copy new docs et al to your old hdd.

I found I don't often push past 4gb of ram but I am usually at 3.9gb in use, meaning I was swapping before. The extra ram means less swap (and ram is faster than ssd), the ssd means rapid app loads & bootup and I kept a TB of slow hdd for my Dropbox warehouse of family photos and movies.

I would stay away from this like a plague, TN panel and 720p resolution on a 15.6" screen is unbelievably bad. You will have a horrendous experience using this laptop on a daily basis.
The OP and the Walmart product page both clearly state this is a 1080p display...
_____

Budmonster, this laptop has a significantly better processor and significantly better video capabilities that the Acer aspire. The build quality is similar but the Acer has a superior display. Most people will be better off with this Dell rather than the Acer.

I have the Acer Aspire E 15 i3-8130U and the screen isn't that great. I'd hate to see the Dell if its indeed worse. But even that I'm still considering returning it to get the Dell for the 4core/8hyper thread processor and better integrated graphics.

I'd skip this generation of Ryzen mobile processors, Gen 2 Ryzen+ was announced at CES and should be available soon. Look for the 3xxx series.

I bought the same laptop from Best Buy last week. That one did not have an optical drive but had 8 gig of memory. I switched out 1 of the 4 gig memory sticks and thru in a 16 gig stick for a total of 20 gig now. Made it faster. Was pretty easy to do it yourself. The backlit keyboard is great. I only ran into 1 problem. One of the dell programs interferes with your internet speeds. I have a 100mbps download but I was only getting 7 mbps. Updating the program fixed it but I uninstalled it just in case. IMO the screen is good. You have to keep in mind the price point you are at. For the price, It is a heck of a deal.
Which program was causing the issue?

The display is 15.6-inch HD (1366 x 768) Truelife LED-Backlit. Display not 1920. Forget this laptop...

I did the upgrade, fairly simple to pop it open and replace the parts and pop it back together. The biggest problem I had was getting it to boot to the m.2 drive, it kept wanting to boot to the spinny drive and it was pissing me off the bios are trash.
So how did you get it to boot? Are the drive settings not in the bios as one should expect?
