CAREFUL ON WHAT VERSION YOU BUY

NOTE: ALL THIS APPLIES TO THE DOWNLOADABLE OR CD VERSIONS. THE ONLINE PAID VERSION OF DELUXE LIMITS FORMS
H&R Black is doing a little semi shady marketing to try to get you to get use a higher level version. The chart comparing versions is almost worthless and only meant to upsell. Forget the chart they show, instead on the version comparison chart page, click on the different versions and see the supported forms link to get a true picture of what each version will handle. If it supports the forms you need it will work for you. The higher versions may add some feature or guidance that they stress in the chart. The chart makes it appear you may need the next higher version when you don't.

Every year we get good intentioned members here on SD that do not understand this recommending higher versions based on the chart. It costs other members unnecessary expense Lot of misinformation on what version will do what bouncing around and I hope I can clear it up a little.

Here is a concrete example of this that makes it appear Deluxe will not do Schedule C or self employment income. You can see on the chart under "Advanced Schedule C guidance to maximize deductions for self-employment" , Premium is checked and Deluxe is not. Also if you use the "SELECT THE SITUATIONS THAT BEST DESCRIBE YOU" at the top of the chart and select "Self employed you will be taken to the page to purchase Premium.

From the supported forms page. for the Deluxe version we see it does do Schedule C.

Schedule B Interest and Dividends
Schedule C Profit or Loss from Business
Schedule C-EZ Net Profit from Business
Schedule D Capital Gains and Losses
Schedule EIC Earned Income Credit
Schedule SE Self-Employment Tax
NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE FULL LIST. See below for the FULL LIST
This all makes it appear that Deluxe does't do Schedule C and Premium does. Not true at all and the higher version may just an added questions or guidance. It may be another interview section, or ask you some questions along the line of did you spend anything on this type of expense. It's generally not very useful, if you have any idea of what your deductions are, the Deluxe Schedule C walk-through is included and will guide you right through. Schedule C is handled fine by Deluxe. Deluxe works fine for me. I itemize, am self employed and file a Schedule C, wife receives a W2 from her company, have capital gains, IRA, SEP 401K, stocks etc. In other words a fairly complicated return and Deluxe handles my situation. The same is true for other forms and tax situations not just Schedule C. Rental income, depreciation, sale of stocks and many more are all covered by Deluxe.

Here is the full list of supported forms and you will see that unless you have a very complicated return or some obscure form that is needed Deluxe will most likely work for you. Don't fall for shady marketing and save some money.

You can file state and federal on H&R Block website for free. Unless you need more complicated stuff done. But I filed federal and needed a deductions form for student loan interest (which taxact tried to charge me $40 for after I went all the way through). H&R didn't change me anything to eFile fed and eFile state. I did opt to pay an optional $15 for them to store my return for 6 years. Though I'm not sure if you opt out of that if they charge you to file state. It was worded weird. But I figured $15 was a deal either way and they will have all my info next year already. It tells you what is covered for free on their site. So taxact said free, let me get all the way to the end and tried charging me $120 or something crazy. It was $40 for the deductions form I needed and $40 each to file 2 state returns, one of which was for NH that doesn't charge tax! Besides being mad I realized they must not be that good if they didn't even have basic info like NH has no return. So I tried kredit karma but they can't file for working in a diff state then you live. So surprisingly it was H&R Block that came through for me.

Looks like this year HRBlock is conspiring with retailers to set a min price not below $20 ... except the Officedepot deal I got where I got PM to Amazon plus $15 OD/OM Gift Card for free so turned out better deal than anything else this year so far (was in a diff thread on SD)

My wife and I will jointly file our tax and we work 2 different states in 2018

I want to clarify that if I buy the Deluxe 2018 Federal + State
It included e-file Fed and one state program (for print out and mail), and then I have to pay extra $39.99 for the 2nd state program.

Do I get it right? Thanks!

I agree. Some of the coupons that they mailed out with the CDs expire on 2/10 and 2/19. There must be a price change after that and I can't imagine it going up.

I hesitated because of the OD gift card. I rarely shop with them since they are not competitive on price and didn't see how I would use the gift card.

If you have access to two computers, you should be able to install one state program on one computer, and the other state program can be installed on the second computer (without paying extra for the 2nd state program). I believe that you can then transfer the H&R Block files associated with one state program to the other computer that contains the second state program. This should give you both state programs on one computer at no additional charge.
