Activision is offering a voluntary refund program for customers who bought the Guitar Hero Live gaming system on or after December 1, 2017 in the United States. Customers may qualify for a refund if:

They purchased Guitar Hero Live in the United States during the period starting December 1, 2017 and ending on January 1, 2019;
They submit a completed Claim Form by the deadline of May 1, 2019; and
Their purchase of Guitar Hero Live since December 2017 can be confirmed by Activision.
Customers with a receipt: Submitting a purchase receipt with the Claim Form is the surest way to receive a full refund (up to MSRP).

Customers with a credit card statement: Customers without a receipt may submit a Claim Form with a credit card statement hiding or removing all information except their name, the date of purchase, name of store, and charge associated with purchase of Guitar Hero Live.

Customers without a receipt or credit card statement: Customers without a receipt or credit card statement may still submit a completed Claim Form, and Activision will attempt to verify eligibility.

OTHER INFORMATION: Customers found eligible for a refund will receive a prepaid Visa (or similar) card 8-12 weeks after the close of the claim period deadline of May 1, 2019. Refund amounts will vary based on purchase price and whether a purchase can be confirmed. Refunds may not exceed MSRP. Activision has the sole discretion to deny or approve claims.

Was there a lawsuit or something? Why are they doing this?

I guess they got complaints because the servers got shutdown in December, making 92% of the tracklist unplayable.

wow this sets a precedent for all the games that got server shut down. imagine you buy a game that's online only and you can't play. (The Crew 2, For Honor, Division, Destiny, etc.)

As more of this stuff happens, folks may finally begin to realize the HUGE problem with buying digital content with Digital Rights Management. We no longer own any of the digital products we are buying, we're just leasing them.

I keep hearing stories of movies being removed from people's Apple accounts because of a licensing issue with the movie's production company, or online-only games servers shutting down leaving the game completely unplayable. Obviously, you don't have much choice sometimes if you really want to play a specific game, but the more people actually care about ownership of their content, the better.

I personally try to support sites that offer DRM-free content like GOG.com to help avoid the inevitable disappointment of losing access to my content. Steam may be around for a long time, but there is always uncertainty. Every other company also wants to have their own DRM, and many of them will eventually disappear, making you lose access to your content. Support DRM-free and physical copies of games whenever possible, guys.

Yikes. This is a scary precedent for digital purchases... makes me nervous about the hundreds of dollars I've sunk into digital games and media.

Same I haven't even opened mine yet and I loved guitar hero back in the day. Welp time to get a refund and try to repurpose the guitar somehow. Maybe solo kill Calus @ the Leviathan in Destiny 2 with it.

From what I can gather, they sold the rights to the game, but did not tell the buyer about the end of the service that left a ton of songs inaccessible. The buyer dropped a lawsuit, and it is believed that Activision is doing this to avoid any potential lawsuits in the future.

I think the bigger issue here isnt that the game lost its "servers" but rather their original contract for the music was time gated. This is the same nonsense that happend for (Allen's wake?) Where they lost the rights to use the music in the game.

It has nothing to do with digital downloads, content, etc like some here are implying.
