Why buy this stuff like this? Why not just get it for less than half the price in the diesel isle at the truck stop?

Is all motor oil the same? I mean I'd rather pay a little more and get name brand then store brand of anything.
It should all be exactly the same - I had no idea what this is or what it's for, so I looked it up on wikipedia: "Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is an aqueous urea solution made with 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water." Doesn't seem open to any kind of variation between brands. I had assumed this was for 'rolling coal'. What happens if you run out - does it just put out dirtier exhaust, or does it somehow force you to keep it supplied? Amazing tech - good for all of you for cutting pollution.

Be sure to buy from stores where other people are buying it too. You don't want to put stuff that's too dated into your truck.

If you run out your truck stops running and it damages a $5,000 diesel particulate filter.

My local Costco had it for $9.89 the other day, for those who don't have Ace nearby.

Not motor oil, this is just some crap that gets sprayed at the beginning of your exhaust to help reduce emissions, I don't think you'll ruin anything but when you run-out your vehicle will no longer restart until you fill the reservoir.

It's simply overregulation at it's finest, just say thank you EPA, whom costs us a few hundred billion a year in regulations and around 9 billion to run.. don't get me wrong some regulation is needed, but we're far from the largest polluter.
I am sure Volkswagen would agree.

Diesel exhaust fluid sounds like the thing you send the new guy to the store for. "Yeah, ask for the diesel exhaust fluid, some headlight fluid and some elbow grease."

I guess it helps with emissions but I thought it funny when these systems started coming out and a truck salesman tried to tell me that it was such a great thing because it's better for the truck. Which I knew to be bunk then and I know it to be even more so now. That system breaks and has more issues than any other on our volvos.

The system is tied into the electronics on newer Diesel engines. When the computer reports a problem with the urea system it can shut your engine performance down to like 10%. A friend found this out in his brand new RV the hard way.
