My HTPC (i5 ivy bridge) has 10 3.5" drives internal and another 4-drive JBOD box. My gaming PC (Ry1800x) has nine 3.5 internal drives plus the nvme m.2 boot drive. My video editing rig (TR 1950x) has six 3.5 drives plus two nvme m.2s (boot and scratch).

I've been looking for a case to do a portable-ish gaming rig I could use in the living room where I normally keep my laptop (SSD and second 2.5 spinner). But given my datahording habits, it too will have space for 3.5s. That is until 2.5 SSDs get closer to the $/gb pricing of spinners.
You use a M.2 Drive as a scratch drive? I thought using SSD drives as scratch drives was a bad idea.

Just getting into the market for a new desktop. These days does it still save money to watch slickdeals for parts and piece something together, or am I better off just watching for a pre-built deal? (looking for a good video editting machine)
