Chain Reaction Cycles has the tacx vortex smart bike trainer on sale for $260 with free shipping. It's a great entry level smart trainer perfect for Zwift. CRC is an UK based store so you might have to buy a power plug adapter, but that should only be a few bucks.

https://www.chainreactioncycles.c...prod125671

Normal price is closer to $400.

Shoot! Just bought a Kinetic by Kurt trainer two weeks ago for $210. I'm pretty happy with the kinetic but probably would have paid $260 for this one to get the interactive resistance. There are a bunch of bad reviews in the website though...

Why the thumbs down? This seems like a good deal and ships free to the US... just would need an adapter. My biggest fear would be how much it would cost to return to the UK if there were issues.
It would be 2 dollars. I think that is the cost chain reaction chargers for returns. They'll cover the rest.

The last time I used it was terrible. My package set in the us for 4 weeks before boarding a ship to it's destination. Took over a month to get it returned. CS couldn't explain why it was sitting and finally refunded my money declaring the package lost. Then the next day it moved onto the ship.

So if you have a lot of patience then the returns aren't expensive. They also handle warranty claims for most products. You deal with them and they'll deal with the manufacturer.

Edit: it all sounds great. I know. But I'll not deal with them again. In my case I waited 4 weeks on a 500 dollar return because they sent me the wrong item. The CS went downhill after the merger with Wiggle.

I think you might have answered your question yourself
I had issues with mine. I sent an email then a video of the weird noise it was making. They shipped me the replacement part that I needed free of charge. Solid entry level trainer, however, I would invest in a stages power meter first. Got mine on sale for $100 plus tax last year on their website (duraace 7900).

I own a Cycleops/Cyclops unit. How is this compared to it? Same? Worse? Better?

off topic: I've been looking for a spin bike when I can't go out mountain biking. Haven't had luck finding a chain drive magnet resistance system.

I wouldn't buy from chain reaction if you're in the US. Check out the thread for the park tools Ps-10 stand from November. Multiple people reported lost packages, ancillary fees from the carriers, foreign transaction fees from their credit cards etc.

I ordered mine in Nov and got an email that it had shipped with a "Tracking number" that never showed any data. It took 9! Emails with customer service for them to admit the package was "lost" [read, never shipped]. Then they offered myself and another person either refunds or to ship a replacement we both selected a replacement, and both times they said "oops sorry, out of stock".

I think they hope you order and just forget about it, or at least they get a short term interest free loan.

Good price but I like my direct drive trainer better. I use a Kickr core.

Back in the day when we had no Zwift we used to do DVD workouts over the winter. Totally sucked after about a week. Zwift and all the others like it are a game changer. That and fat bikes.

The resistance is manually controlled by you via the cable/selector. "Smart" trainers can do this interactively via whatever software you are using in combination.
