I paid $20 for a Klein NCV alone, when in a pinch because my Sperry became unreliable. I wish I could've waited for a deal like this to come along.

This is a decent deal. The NCVT is Wirecutter's top pick [thewirecutter.com] and generally retails for ~$25 alone. If you need one, you get it 20% off plus get a free outlet tester. What would make it a really good deal is if it were a GFCI tester.

in! ive got the sperry and that thing is so unreliable its unsafe. Sometimes it senses no voltage when I know there is, and other times it lights up like a christmas tree on wires that arent even connected to anything making me jump out of my skin

To get anything with the Klein name on it for under $20 is probably gonna be a good deal...lol. Amazing quality tools, but def pricey.

As others have complained several times in 10 postings so far, I also have the Sperry. IMO, the thing is horrible. It detects voltage from 12-24" away from a source. So, it's detecting tons of voltage. I was hoping to use it to diagnose christmas lights and just couldn't do it. when i got a couple feed from the net, it would go off.

I used my dad's Klein (it's a tad older than these, maybe previous generation, i forgot to get his model #), but i can tell which wire in a power cord is hot. so, within a few mm it will be on or off. WAY better than within 12-24" with the sperry.

I thought something was off with my Sperry because I also have an always on, light only, seemingly cheap NCVT. That detects similar to the Klein, within 1/8" or less. So, I warrantied the Sperry thinking it might be a bad unit. The new one does the exact same thing. So, they'll get thrown out when i get this one.

For those of you who are DIY but a tad scared of electricity (I am), this is for your 3rd and 4th check. Make sure you identify lights / outlets on a circuit. I turn the circuit on / off twice and verify each time just to make sure i have the right circuit. And then use these as a just in case. Might be overkill, but getting shocked isn't fun (though it does wake you up!)

If this tool does what I hope it will do based on other NCVT, it wouldn't. You would need to be within a half inch or less of the wire. The wires behind drywall will be maybe 2" away from the drywall.

I haven't used any tools to detect wires, but I'm sure something exists. Doing home electrical (I'm DIY and not a pro), its pretty basic. If you have no outlets on either side of the wall where you're looking, and there's none upstairs or in the basement, most likely you won't have it behind the wall. if you're between 2 outlets (usually about 12" off the ground?), you might have a horizontal wire going between then about the same distance. This probably won't always be the case. you can always hire a professional if worried about cutting a line

No. You'll need a toner for that.

Nope. It'll tell you if a cord is hot or not, but it won't find anything past the jacket of the cable.
