Broken bits are par for the course for small drill bits, and not exactly a measure of quality. Typically the sharper it is, the harder the steel, and the more brittle it becomes. When you factor in how skinny the cross section of the bit is, especially at the fluted parts, it should be no surprise that they break at the smallest suggestion of sideways force.

To prevent breakage, chuck them up in a drill press or use some sort of a guide (speed square?) with a handheld drill to make sure that the only motion is straight up/down, because any sideways movement will break a small bit, even an expensive high quality one.

i would scratch metal off the list... cheap bits rarely drill thru metal.

I'd agree with this completely. *Maybe* soft metals, but generally I'd just stick to wood with these. I haven't been a big fan of Ryboi bits in the past. They do seem to have a higher break rate than comparable brands. Don't use too much pressure... just let the bit do the work.

I don't think it's YMMV, which is why a BS link is usually needed. Though stock varies in this case, but that can be checked from the Home Depot site itself
