For replacing HDD or SSD in this machine, you also need to take a different steps apart from just cloning the HDD OS partition to the SSD. Since this Laptop comes with a Intel Optane Memory, some of the OS partitions are present in that 16GB Optane Drive and just removing the HDD or the Optane memory for a different M.2 SSD will make it stop booting. You first need to disable Intel Optane Memory from Intel SST (Smart Storage Technology) Software which will clear the Optane memory and bring all the OS components inside the HDD. After that, you can just do the replacement normal way.

This is by far the cheapest price for this Laptop and at this price, it checks almost all the boxes. The laptop is very thin and light for 15.6 incher and actually the dimension is same as a 14" laptop, has very narrow bezels, quad core CPU, dedicated graphics and very good upgrade options; 2 Ram slots and PCIe NVMe M.2 Slot.
4GB ram is a bit on the lower side but now the ram prices are coming down and getting a 4GB, 8GB or 16GB module is not that costly.

Oh man this is super tempting. I'm just nervous about cracking open laptops. (Weird hangup since I built a few desktops.)

How does Windows work on these machines? If I take out all the harddrives to replace with SSDs, do I need a Windows key or does this machine have it stored in the registry or something?

I think most of the Laptop nowadays stored the key in BIOS or somewhere that's not on the harddrive. The only thing that you'll lose is the recovery partition. Which is useless most of the time for me since I always re-install the drive with a clean Windows so I can get rid of the crappy pre-installed softwares. I have never ever use the recovery partition.

At this price, it is very hard to find a laptop with even these configuration. Sure, you can get the Acer E15 series laptop with a 256GB SSD and 2GB MX150 but they are not what you can call portable or good looking. For SSD, you can get a 256GB M.2 SSD below $40 now a days.

So doing some research, it looks like this optane memory makes it perform on par with a regular SSD? This would be beneficial since the SSD's are too small of harddrive space for the money...I need 1 TB minimum. Would you see similiar load and boot times that a traditional SSD would put out?

The read speed will be comparable with a 128GB SSD.

Actually this is true for any Computer, Desktop or Laptop, with Optane memory. I ran into issues in my HP Omen 15T gaming Laptop which comes with 16GB Optane Memory as well and when I replaced that with HP EX920 1TB SSD, the Laptop was stuck in Bios Screen. So, first I had to again reattach it, boot into Windows 10 and then disable Optane.

Con: 4gb memory, no SSD.
Pro: Cheap, decent GPU.

I think price and GPU more than makes up for the lack of memory and SSD. Those two are (should be) easy to add later. My wife has the 14" Vivobook and we're impressed with ASUS build quality.
