I spent my teen years in NJ, and I evaluate subs based on a their "standard Italian." JJ, Jersey Mike's, and Penn Station are the best chain stores in the local area (Firehouse is not convenient for the route my kids mom drives when coming to visit).

The first and most important thing is the bread. IMHO if they have a soft crust bread, i.e. subway, then what's the point. All three of them have good bread. I simply cannot abide Subway as their bread is mediocre, as least from the dozen or so stores I've tried. My kids mom love it BTW.

Next is the cheese and the meats. A good mozzarella is a must, and I have a strong preference for a good provolone too. Meats have some acceptable variance, and you must have a good quality prosciutto or salami, preferably both as well as a variety of other lunch meats. Oil, vinegar, and oregano are required to be available for toppings, and since I'm in the South I've learned to make sure that I do not get mayonnaise, but I'll forgive local preferences that automatically put mayo on one. Fresh vegetables are a must for whichever you have added, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions are a minimum, and I have a preference for red onions.

Penn Station is the weakest of the three. Their hot subs are quite good, but they use Italian dressing for oil and vinegar, and while their meats are good, they are not the excellent ones at the others. I would say their non-Italian subs are actually slightly better quality than their Italian ones.

JJ and Jersey Mikes are excellent. I agree about the prices, and given my dietary limitations it's good these deals are few and far between. I prefer Jersey Mikes because their meat tastes like the local deli meat at the Italian deli/sub shop I learned to love subs at in New Jersey.

My guess is your local JJ had older meat, or somebody didn't clean up properly and instead of disposing of leftover toppings put them away for the next day. I've had a friend who's worked in food service most of his life and he has nothing but contempt for owners who cut corners, or supervisors who let lazy employees dump the real clean-up on a few conscientious workers. In fact those workers can actually be bitched at for "taking so long" - that dynamic never ends well, somebody eventually gets sick as the conscientious employees leave for better working conditions. Try a JJ in another market (if it's a franchisee problem it could be over several stores sadly) before you judge them quite so harshly, seriously I've never had a bad JJ when I worked at an ATCT that routinely had them delivered for lunch, so probably once a month for three years for me.
Dude...

For those that have never been one feature is they actually have a flat grill for making things like the Philly cheese steak. Made to order, not just some slop out of a steam tray.

No trouble with the last bogo coupon and 1st time w/JMs but that has to be the skinniest sub sand I've ever seen.

Tried this place for the first time a couple months ago (none near my house) and was actually really good. Maybe not quite as good as Publix subs imo (or Firehouse), but def better than the Subways, JJ's, and others. Thanks OP. Repped.
Agree, Publix subs are still the best IMO. Firehouse definitely comes in a close second.

FYI the cashier should ring up both subs THEN scan the coupon and it adjusts to give you one free... Just in case they seem to be having trouble.

Big Kahuna Cheese Steak is truly tasty. I'd be annoyed if I paid $10 for just one sandwich, though. $5 each is a decent deal.

Nothing beats a Publix sub...
That's great for the 5 or so states that have a Publix.
Of course I live around Philly where the choices for 'subs' (hoagies) are endless. I got in on the last Jersey Mike's BOGO though and thought the sandwiches were pretty decent, although a bit small for the price (definitely not a good value at their regular prices).

This is the most sensible thing ever written on SD. Repped.
