I sang the praises of this game last time it was on sale. Story mode is still awesome. If you plan to play online, it gets worse every week. Like most big titles, they want you to buy their in game currency. In this case gold. Many of the most necessary things like guns and ammo can be bought with money earned from hunting and fishing. One of the best horses can be bought with cash, another with gold. Most recent thing they did was tinker with the economy. People were earning lots of money hunting and in their most recent "patch" they cut the money that was being made that way in half. One of the things you had to do in the game was kill birds and big game certain ways to get the most harvested parts. Meaning if you killed a 3 star spoonbill, you would get 3 feathers, 3 plumes and some other parts. Now it's not guaranteed that you'll get a clean kill on the bird and you get one plume regardless of the star rating. Plumes were worth the most. The animal price decrease was not included in the patch notes. After being questioned about it, Rockstar claimed it was a bug. Meanwhile real bugs like animals you killed disappearing and glitching pelts on your horse are still a problem. If you play the game that last part may make sense.

Being that the online portion of the game is even more of a grind, I would recommend that you buy ultimate if you're going to invest in this game. With Ultimate, you start off with some guns, you get a rank boost up until level 30, and a few outfits. Maybe the online portion will get sorted out soon, but people are already turning away from the game because there's not a whole lot to do. You can hunt, do PVP. They also added daily challenges that are at times not possible to do. First week of those required you to get kills with an unreleased gun. Another required my rank 5 character to get kills with a rank 50 unlockable gun. If you do all the challenges, you get one gold bar. I don't believe anything worthwhile costs one gold bar. If you still have friends playing and don't mind a slow grind for everything in the game, go right ahead.

If you are single with no kids and have the time to invest in the game then it is fun. If you are married with kids like myself, then the ungodly amount of time you spend riding your horse is boring as hell. YMMV

I think a lot of people find it fun and the story is great. Personally however, I found the gameplay clunky and boring. Look at some gameplay videos and decide if it's something that looks fun to you.

Most highly overrated game of this generation. I bought an Xbone X specifically for this, and it was a big disappointment. A chore to play.

I enjoyed it but it could have been half as long and been a better game for it. If you get more value out of a long game then you will probably like it but if you highly value your time you might not.
