I'm not sure if Gears Of War is first party MS, but for GamePass subscribers, first party games will never leave gamepass like third party games do.

Also, if you game on Xbox and PC, and have gamepass, go to Windows Store on your PC and you can see and play games on there for free as well (that are cross compatible).

So if you have an xBox One game installed and up to date from the physical disc, and then you purchase the digital version, what happens exactly? Once you enter the games redemption code you simply no longer have to use the disc to play the game? Or does the system make you redownload and install it?

You just don't need the disc anymore and can play it on pc because it's play anywhere.

On PS4 you have to re-download it, I believe Xbox isn't the same. You should be good.
