It's free. It's a launch point and store front for PC games. So rather than have 300 games stored throughout your PC and cluttering your desktop, you can use Steam and that are all in a list on your library. Steam also takes care of patches and updates for you too.

That's an oversimplification.

One of the best CIV games imo. The MONTHS of playtime are well worth a dollar.

It is the Steam version, no issues for me just throwing it out there just in case.

This is still my go to game after all these years. I do play the newer versions, but I always come back to civ3 and it is one of the first things I install on any new desktop or laptop.

I wouldn't recommend Civ 3 for anyone other than nostalgia seekers. It was a great game for its time, but it feels very dated now. Alpha Centauri is the Civ game from that era that is worth playing for reasons other than nostalgia. If you enjoy the combat aspect of Civ at all, then it's really tough to go back to any pre-hex Civ game (i.e. before Civ 5).

Maybe it's been updated, but this was by far the worst Civ game at the time. In lieu of programming competent AI they just blatantly let computer opponents cheat, giving them resources that don't exist and making them scale on a fixed path (and an unfair one at that).

Want to stop their shuttle program by taking away their aluminum? Too bad, they get it anyway because reasons. Have them smashed down to one city with your horse archers? Too bad, here comes Abraham Lincoln with 15 riflemen because screw you.

The multiplayer is better but doesn't bring much to the table that other versions don't do better. Probably still worth a dollar, but not much more than that.

What is Steam and does it cost anything? This question from a non-gamer boomer. I have wanted to try this game for a long time, and now have the time to play it.

And if you're old and remember having to keep install media and codes around for your games, that's gone too.

never got into these, can't find a reason even for a buck :/
Honestly it's all about the AI...if it is clever it's fun....if it is stupid and bi polar then it ruins it
