This device is just a nearly-featureless black box; all the work is done by software. Unfortunately, as DVRs go, this one is remarkably primitive (so far). For example, if I want to record the morning news, it makes 4 recordings because the morning news at 4:00am, 4:30am, 5:00am, and 6:00am have the same name in the program guide. There's no way to type in the name of a program to record; you must find and click it in the guide. Worst of all, playback is very glitchy, and always hangs when a new recording starts while you are watching. I had to connect it directly to my router: on wifi it was just too unstable. And so on. I hope Amazon gets around to updating the software before they kill the device off because of poor sales...

I have a Tivo Roamio OTA and an Amazon Recast and like the Tivo Roamio better. Tivo has been around for a very long time and has had a long time to make that a good product. But there are several features of the Recast that I like better. With the Recast you can watch recordings away from home on a phone or tablet with the Fire TV app installed on it. Another is that Amazon just added (within the last week) a new feature where you can add an external hard drive via USB to the Recast and increase the amount of storage. Another feature of the Recast that I like is that I can watch recordings on an Echo Show.

Amazon has slowly been improving the Recast and I expect that it will only get better over time. It's not perfect but it is getting better.

Big difference between Tivo and Recast is cost.

With Recast you can support multiple screens with just the Firesticks. Those Firesticks will also do all of your streaming and other apps as needed. With Tivo you not only have to purchase the box at a higher price extending to other screens adds cost and Tivo support for streaming services is very limited. You can also place Recast anywhere in the house, with Tivo you have to be where the antenna jack is which might might be limiting to some.

Another nice feature is that the guide from your OTA and some of the IPTV services is merged together so you are not jumping around.

In my opinion Recast and Tablo (headless DVR) way is better than Tivo and those solutions especially Recast will only get better while Tivo is trying to figure out what to do.

I've used Tivo and it's great for what it is but to me OTA is just one of the media sources not the main one and the way Amazon blends it all in one interface is the way to go.
