It worked like a charm on my friends back door.

Wd40, or, water displacement 40, is a solvent and as the title says - used to displace moisture. It's used to wash away old grease, rust, or oil, and as a mild penetrating oil. It's not intended to be used as a lubricant, so don't blame user error for that. Second thing is silicone makes a great friction reducer but it's silicone and once it's on a surface, it's pretty much there forever less acid washing/burring/abrasives.

Most prefer 303 Aerospace for that.

This stuff is great, I've used it very successfully on door hinges and locks, metal springs, anything metal that makes noise or has resistance.

So do I. Actually prefer anything over the over-rated WD40.

I would use white lithium instead.

This is great for rubber seals on your vehicle. Door and trunk/rear hatch seals could use a good spray of this to keep them from cracking.

Looking for good lubricant to avoid black marks (resulting from metal grinding against each other, no squeaking) on indoor door hinges. Any suggestions?

I prefer 3n1 oil over grease or SL for hinges.

Have you checked if your door is plumb, level and square? Sometimes door lag will put pressure on the hinges causing them to rub against other causing the metal shavings. I've found 3n1 oil is best for hinges but others prefer grease.
