PSA: Walmart to discontinue Savings Catcher from 5/14

Dear Customer,

Here at Walmart, we've always been committed to providing you with low prices every day, so you and your family can save money and live better. Savings Catcher, which compares nationally advertised prices through submitted receipts, was designed to catch occasions when a competitor's price on a particular item was found to be lower than what you paid for it at Walmart.

What we've learned through Savings Catcher is that our efforts to lower prices upfront on thousands of items across our stores is working. Walmart's prices win most often when you submit your receipts, which tells us that the program's intent has been met.

That's why we have decided to discontinue the Savings Catcher receipt submission, effective May 14, 2019. After May 14, you will no longer be able to submit your Walmart Pay eReceipts to Savings Catcher. But don't worry, the money you have on your Savings Catcher eGift Card will remain yours to spend until you're ready to use it.

We want to thank you for your loyalty and your participation in the program. We'll continue to work hard to offer you features and services that deliver on our promise to save you time and money—whether you're shopping in our stores or online at Walmart.com.

Some stores near me refuse to price match due to savings catcher. I wonder how (or if) this will affect their policies.

"Walmart's prices win most often when you submit your receipts, which tells us that the program's intent has been met."

Translation: "The program's intent of saving you money was actually just cutting into our margins. So instead of refunding the savings to you from now on when competitors undersell us, we are going to give the savings to our shareholders."

I'm going to miss it. My savings catcher account shows I've gotten $849.55 back over the years I've used it. Usually a few bucks back each week ($2~$5) but it adds up. I'm definitely not going to bother using Walmart Pay anymore though... total PIA requirement to submit receipts to Savings Catcher they started a while back. Feel pissed... maybe I'll shop at another store, but Walmart usually does have the lowest prices overall...

I was just thinking that this is the only reason I use Walmart pay. I will no longer be using it. It's a pain in the butt. They should use Google or Apple pay like everyone else.

This was a backdoor attempt by Walmart to get Millennials and Zoomers hooked on the Walmart Pay app - which appears to have been a dismal failure.

I'm increasingly sick of retail stores designing their promotions around flaky apps that have no utility beyond that lone store.
