Shucking is taking the hard drive itself out of the portable/external enclosure, to install it internally in a laptop/desktop/etc. Because sometimes it's cheaper to buy the hard drive with the casing and remove the hard drive from its casing, than to just buy the hard drive by itself.

For anyone asking about shucking, it's not easy and not worth the time on the My Passport USB drives. All the new WD 2.5" drives have direct USB interface boards on them.

The Elements can be shucked and have Blues.

which is the the best deal? I am really on the market to buy one?

I want to use it for my work linux pc and my macbook for 500 GB data.

What is the for mac means? I need it both for pc and mac. Can it use for both?

My eyes are on the 2T ones, which is better comparing to https://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-m...Id=6203245 (WD - My Passport 2TB External USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive with Hardware Encryption for $70) and why it is better?

Thank you and best wishes,

People do it for various reasons. Like Dimensional says, people do it for getting the drive cheaper. Other times there is an issue with the board/usb connection/software or something that makes the computer not read the drive. If you can take it out of the enclosure, you generally can plug it up to the pc with an adapter or another enclosure to get your data off the drive. I have had to help people get the data off numerous times and like to have one that is able to be shucked.

From the description on the 4tb Ultra "If your computer doesn't have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems."
