Am I imagining it or do all of the more recent routers have abysmal customer ratings? This one is no different.

it's not that newer routers are bad, they are just marketing BS.

i use an ac3100 to cover 2,000sqft for 5 online busy adults
and thanks to merlin plus it's many available updated apps
i can't imaging needing to replace it with anything better.

that said, you can find lightly used ac3100 on ebay for half this.

MAN, these are still crazy expensive, I'm running Merlin and get huge range on mine.

I snagged 4 from this crazy $69 SD ... those were the days.

I bought the router when there's a YMMV deal on SD two years ago. After I upgraded the firmware, it lost WiFi. Called Asus support and was advised to send it back. I was too lazy to send it to Asus plus it might have cost my $10-20 to do it. Therefore the router collected dust for almost two years until I found the time to try to manually update the firmware again about four months ago. After the update, it worked fine and provided much better coverage than my Apple Airport Extreme. However, it dropped WiFi signal several times a day. I googled and people also complained about the same problem. Thus, it went back to its original packaging and collect dust.
