'Tis a poor craftsman who blames his tools. Spade bits are not and never have been designed to do anything but chew holes quickly. There's always a right tool for the job and if you want a nice clean hole these aren't it. But when you need the job done good enough and quickly these are the best. As for being dangerous.. all tools can be dangerous when used improperly or by someone incompetent on the trigger end.

Have these. Very sharp cut like crazy. However not for anything precision , these rip into wood almost uncontrollably due to the screw lead in.

Picked this up last week for quick and dirty attaching of vice to an old work bench (I know there are other/better ways...hence quick and dirty Wink I'll second the rough and imprecise nature of this due to that tip. Pulls it right on through in a hurry!

100% agree these are not for anything precision. rough in work only. This will chew a hole in teh wood far more than it does anything else.

Yes. They make a hole in wood approximately the diameter of the marking in the bit. It's great, unless you need a clean hole. Then you should use something else.

Is this good for drilling 1/2-in holes for toggle bolt? I currently use a 1/2-in standard drill bit but always need to wiggle it a bit to make the hole big enough for the folded wing to go thru (even the bolt instruction says 1/2 drill). I usually find studs but there are a few cases studs are just not available in the spot I need. Thanks.

I hate these spade bits. Bought, and immediately returned.

Not only do that chew through holes, they're dangerous. If you don't have an appropriate grip, or are drilling in tight spaces, it's easy for it to hook/jam into the wood... and take the drill or your entire arm for a ride. Leaves a nice bruise.

Never again.
