Nice 4K deals on iTunes! How does one play these on a home theater without an Apple TV? We have a Roku 4K box and hate to have to replace it.

iTunes transfer over to those? I've always been afraid to purchase anything on iTunes because I don't have anything Apple

Does it seem to anyone else that the same few movies keep coming up on sale over and over and over? With the huge library these many studios have, its kind of ridiculous how little variety there is. Their "regular price" for digital titles of $10-18 is a nonstarter for me, even $5 bucks is starting to seem egregious since its almost the price of a monthly Netflix subscription AND I'll probably only stream it once, if that.

Most of them will. You have to check and see if they are on Movies Anywhere. If they show up there on a search, then they will port. Off the top of my head Die Hards do port, Reds and Expendables do not.

But if you purchase from iTunes in 4k, I heard MA only ports the HD, not 4k. Anyone able to confirm? I also read about Apple releasing an app for roku and other smart devices so you'll no longer be required to use the Apple TV. I believe it was supposed to initially release in May. If this is the case, I'll finally bite on these great 4k iTunes deals. Vudu needs to step up their game

Does anybody know how to track when these movies are scheduled to be free on Netflix, Hulu, or amazon prime? I wonder if there is any correlation between movies going on sale and when they will be included in a paid subscription service. I use JustWatch app, it's helpful. But not exactly what I'm looking for.
Thanks.

It's complicated. If you buy individual movies, they transfer as 4K but only if purchased after MA launched. For bundles they transfer as HD even if they play as 4K on Apple TV. I've read that bundles ending in an amount other than $.99 transfer as 4K but I haven't personally tested it.

If 4k is available at the time of purchase, iTunes will transfer 4k rights to MA.
The issue you are referring to is for bundles, they transfer as HD if the ending price is .99.

All the complicated-ness of this makes me think it's no wonder why so much piracy. On the one hand, It costs more to stream a new release "rental" than rent physical copy at Redbox. But on the other hand and for these older movies, it costs more to buy physical copy than to buy/stream from online source. I am assuming iTunes purchase does not give you the ability to make a physical copy after downloading, so in effect you will be streaming your content. Maybe you can download it to an encrypted file, but downloading/streaming none the less.

One argument for streaming is cost of hardware to make it possible. That doesn't seem to marry up with lower cost to stream older movies.

I get supply n demand. Just venting a bit.

Cost of uhd is just too damn high!
