We bought the 4 piece set and already returned it. Ok quality, not great, doesn't seem like they would last, wheels are for drag behind which is good but not great, two small sizes are really not very good IMO.

Use them for Years on cruises , still holding up well. No wheel problems or with handles
Duffle does not have a pullout handle , so I got others to use.

recommendation is just a recommendation. You gotta buy what you want to buy.
I think luggages with spinner wheels are pretty convenient to use. Of course, if I am going to worry about what COULD happen, I would probably not fly in the first place.
Nailed. It.

Bought this last year. You get what you pay for.
The "Wheeled duffel" of the 4 piece set does not have a retractable handle, which makes it pretty much useless.

Why is that? The duffel bag weighs less so you have more weight available for stuff?
Everyone has their own preference.

I hate duffles after carrying one over the shoulder during 24 hours travel to Brazil. Won't travel without wheels.

Suitcases have more structure so items don't move around as much, protects more.

Yeah, I'd look for a duffel with wheels. Traveling with a heavy bag without wheels is brutal in an airport.

It's not clear if dimensions (21" and 25") are inside dimensions or outside including wheels dimensions.

The luggage dimensions are NEVER from inside.

I have to disagree: I've seen dimensions being either outside dimensions with wheels, outside dimensions without wheels or inside dimensions
Quote from satellite779

Except wheels are often not included in total dimensions when external dimensions are quoted, and that's what airlines care about. So my question is still valid. Instead of debating this topic with me let others provide an answer that is important for anyone who wants to actually use these bags. I.e. if the 21 bag size doesn't include wheels, it might be actually 23 tall and not usable as checked bag.

The other commenter is correct. Perhaps in the detailed description a manufacturer may include many other dimensions such as inside height or width or depth or cubic inch or foot volume. But the total height with wheels is usually part of the model name of each suitcase.
From what I know if it just says 21" for a regular one it's 21 outside dimensions including the wheels and for spinner luggage it's 21" outside dimensions excluding wheels.

1. American Tourister website indicates the 21" and 25" height are "case dimensions". I have to assume that means the body of the suitcase, not including wheels etc.
2. The only place I found anything for the overall dimensions was the Walmart website. It shows :
21 UPRIGHT: 23" X 14.8" X 8.3" 5.55 LB
25 UPRIGHT: 27" X 17.3" X 9.8" 7 LB

FWIW, the last set I bought was from BuyDig, $85 for a 5-piece Samsonite set [buydig.com], back in Oct 2016, and the set didn't last two years.

I also bought a $40 carry-on from Costco and the telescoping handle broke after a few trips.

Still, I'm tempted to buy this set because I'm not convinced a more expensive set would last 5x longer.
I bought a 29" VIP in 2005, which cost about usd120 at that time it is still intact. We should judge product cost in terms ability to use over time and time and money spent on repurchase as well. Just my 2 cents

I agree.. it's just sometimes hard to know what will last, and what won't.

From an environmental standpoint also, it's much better to buy things once that will last, rather than re-buying cheap stuff every few years.
