Definitely not much of a discount, however it's the first time I've seen it lower than list

Correct!

According to an email from B&H, as of 4/1, they will be charging tax on sales to CA in the very least. This is an email I received on 3/13 from them.

"Important Message Regarding Sales Tax
As you may know, based on a June 2018 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, California is now requiring out of state sellers to collect sales tax. As a result, B&H will begin to collect sales tax on shipments to California on April 1st. All reputable retailers are complying with the new laws and collecting sales tax..."

Doesn't anyone have any thoughts on this model versus the DS1618+?

I was waiting for this model to come out, but when it did a bunch of people on reddit were saying last year's 6-bay model was likely a better option due to the additional bay, plus an arguably better CPU. However, the DS1618+ needs a PCIE card to support NVME drives for caching, so that adds to the cost.

I'm looking to upgrade from my DS415+ since those units are on borrowed time due to an Intel CPU defect. It's mostly used as a network share for a few PCs at home and my Plex server. While the load is pretty light, I still feel SSD caching could improve the performance of some apps (sonarr, radarr, headphones, etc)

The 1618 is also more money.

They are serving slightly different purposes.

No doubt, but it is slightly older too. I wish I had an alert setup last year when it was available for $599/$499

For those who like synology OS but not the sticker price or weak CPUs, build your own robust NAS and install Xpenology

At that price I'd have a hard time not biting.

I bought a 5bay drobo recently on clearance at micro center forn$175 normally 429. I shouldn't even be looking at these threads...

You're not actually installing xpenology. You're install Synology. Xpenology is just a bootloader which allows REAL full Synology OS on standard PC hardware.

DS1019+ would be much better if Plex is being used for transcoding. The DS1019+ (and DS918+) use a Celeron J3455 with better video encoding & decoding. The DS1618+ uses an Atom C3538.

DS1019+ is rated for:
2 channel, 30 FPS @ 4K (4096 x 2160), H.264 (AVC)/H.265 (HEVC) or
2 channel, 30 FPS @ 1080p (1920×1080), H.264 (AVC)/H.265 (HEVC)/MPEG-2/VC-1

while the DS1618+ is only rated for:
1 channel, 30 FPS @ 1080p(1920×1080), H.264 (AVC)/MPEG-4 Part 2 (XVID, DIVX5)/MPEG-2/VC-1

Moreover, what kind of differences are we looking at in terms of power consumption? I'm all for building my own solutions, but after years of screwing around with hardware compatibility issues, component failure (which can result in borderline catastrophic data loss in the case of NAS units), etc., I'm not completely sold on the idea that the DIY approach is significantly better in the long run whether we're talking about upfront cost, cost over time (power), or the headaches that may result.

However, given that I'm very poor, I'm very open to being convinced otherwise.
