But MDF is what you want in this case - it dampens extraneous vibrations better than solid wood.

Though the description is misleading, MDF boards are not all the same. I use to sell furniture and higher end furniture companies Henredon, Baker, etc used MDF as the base for veneers on many of their furniture pieces. Ironically some of our least expensive furniture was solid maple manufactured in Canada.

"The beautiful walnut finished cabinet is crafted from solid engineered (MDF) wood"

NOT solid wood... this is medium density fiberboard (MDF) with a walnut veneer (or laminate) - the cheap stuff that Ikea furniture is made from. Calling this a solid wood cabinet isn't accurate.

Bought the black model at normal price ($200) 6 months ago. I've been very happy with it as an upgrade to my basic Sony turntable that I'd been using for years.

I have a receiver that says needs additional equipment for a turntable (something called a phono or preamp iirc), is this normal for receivers?

Yes. You can get a decent phono preamp fairly cheap though.

I have the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon and love it. But no first hand experience with the RT81.
I'm sure there's some great YouTube reviews of both.

Here's a comparison I found doing a quick search:

I could be mistaken, but I think the black model is the RT80, which is a step down from this.

Yeah, both are on sale and listed in links above so just wanted to add my two cents. Very happy with it.

It is also less likely to warp than a solid piece of wood.

True, but according to the conparison link posted, the rt81 has the preamp built into the record player itself. So the OP should be able to plug rca cables directly into their reciever.
