I use the 220s as surrounds in a 7.2.4 system, and think they are the best compact 4" woofer with a wave guide tweeter speaker for the money, everything about them looks high quality.
Replaced pioneer bs22s with these, same size woofers but they are about 40% smaller and work well on speaker stands.

I'm such a noob, I want powered speakers simply because I don't know what to buy to power these. A receiver?

Receiver, or an amp,
Receiver will give u quality audio and surround options, if you just want a stereo then just use a 2 channel amp.

If just a stereo I'd go with the floor standing.

How do the 270s compare to the Pioneer Andrew Jones SP-FS 52s? Looking for an economical option to replace my 20+ year old Technics until I can build out my own custom system.

Far better, that's comparing the BS-22s to the the 220s but there bigger brothers both share the same technology.

Which puts the JBL in a different class.

Any suggestions on a decent receiver? I have the 220s from Christmas and an AT turntable I haven't hooked up yet

You say that, but I keep wanting to try these out, and compare them to my Sony core bookshelves, and elac b5's...and some bw's that I just bought at a garage sale. The pros will say that the Sonys with a decent sub will sound great....I've just been curious about the 220's for music, using a sub of course. From my experience, bookshelves along with a sub, tend to sound a little better than the towers, on these lower priced systems. Albeit not as loud. Anyways, that could just be my opinion, with the last few set ups over the years.
Anyways the JBLs should be getting popular. Probably lots of extensive comparisons now, on the forums.

Use this model, together with 210 as rears and 225c for small 5.1 HT. Maybe bright for some but I love the details, paired with an HK AVR

I have the JBL Arena 180's for fronts and arena 170's for rears. Both sets are floorstanding. Using Polk center until arena 125c goes on sale. I love them but wish I waited for the studios priced like this though.

Would the 220s be good for a 2.1 home theater system?

I would think yes, but I haven't heard them. In other threads I read that they would work well for 2.1.

I had the Fs-52's and the Studio 230 the same time (along with BS22, B6, RP61, Q100, and both core towers & BS to directly compare).

I ended up keeping the Pioneer bookshelf and towers, and the elac B6, though I think most would prefer the JBL's superior detail and clarity. Also more bass but they were 6.5" too. The studio series are built very nicely, look amazing.
