Daily Steal has the Kindle, 6" E Ink Display, Wi-Fi - Includes Special Offers (Graphite) for $24.99 with DSKINDLEcode.

Kindle uses an electronic ink screen that looks and reads like real paper. The matte screen reflects light like ordinary paper and uses no backlighting, so you can read as easily in bright sunlight as in your living room. Unlike tablet screens, Kindle has no glare.

Code:DSKINDLE
Warranty: 90 Day Warranty
This product is Manufacturer Refurbished

So I don't know if it's the same thing or not but I just picked up a Kindle 6" (4th gen) off woot for $15 and I had there $10 off $15 coupon so it was $5. They were in stock for a couple of days at least while I was on the fence. Unfortunately they seem to be out now. So lukewarm deal in my opinion the basement price on these seems to be lower.

I still have and use a Kindle 3 (now called Kindle Keyboard). I like the page turn buttons and physical keyboard when I need it. Battery life is still great (several weeks, several books). Still works great.

I'm not a huge fan of the backlight, since I don't read in bed or anything. I hear the newer screens have a little better contrast, which would be nice, but not enough to get me to upgrade as the Kindle 3 is pretty good (I think this model is the same screen). For $25 as a backup, or travel, or for a kid, or to test out e-readers, I don't think you can go wrong.

You can buy lightly-used kindles that are more modern for about the same price or a bit more on swappa.
Maybe you should check that... I don't see a single listing below $89 unless it's a tablet.

What different audience? The "audience" is the same, those who read e-books on an e-book reader instead of a tablet. Already that is a very narrow audience. The paperwhite has been as low as $70 recently.
The difference is the audience who can't or won't spend 5x the price for a better model, but still would like a reading experience that's better than a tablet.

Ouch... And that's not upgradeable right? Like the nook which takes an SD card?
