Any opinion on to go with open box excellent-certified or just excellent?
Is $18 worth the "certification"?

I believe it only matters in getting the Apple Care with the certification. However, I have been able to purchase apple care directly from apple on hardware that was newly released or has been released less than a year when buying them as open boxes/returns. I don't know how old these units are. Without looking up, I assume early 2018?

I have read about people getting apple care for just "excellent" as well.

ETA: These are from 2017.

This won't sell out because this is about the price this should be and this had been cheaper than this many times before. This is not a deal

I got the 2015 version of this MacBook in 2016. Overall it has worked well for me (with word processing and web surfing, even lighter video editing in iMovie works). Although last year my logic board failed. Because the processor, ram and drive are all on the logic board, it had to be replaced. It was free with apple care but remember to backup your data just to be sure.

I would get apple care if I was buying this again. Some of my friends have said that they feel that it's too small.

Just sharing my experience.

Exact same thing just happened to my 2015 last week, and it died in the care of the Apple repair center during a keyboard/top-case replacement. The repair center just gave me a new Apple refurbished macbook no charge for anything. And I was way out of warranty and didn't have AppleCare.
The AppleCare for macbook is a very good idea, on any Apple product.

That stinks. My local apple store damaged my laptop several times after the initial fix. First they scratched a big mark on the top lip. So the whole screen was replaced (because it includes the top lid). Then they damaged the keyboard after they got it back from a regional apple repair place. I guess it also depends on what store you go to.

DAMN IT! I found it 20 mins ago and had it in my cart but didn't pull the trigger. Just went back to checkout and it wasn't available anymore. Damn it, damn it, damn it.

Hard pass... can't hook up to a display and charge unless you have a USBC monitor or get a lot of dongles.
