Fun and familiar. Introduces Native American history and culture through gameplay. A step-up from old-school Oregon Trail.

Description from website:

When Rivers Were Trails is an educational 2D adventure game which follows an Anishinaabeg in the 1890's who is displaced from Fond du Lac in Minnesota to California due to the impact of allotment acts on Indigenous communities. Developed in collaboration with the Indian Land Tenure Foundation and Michigan State University's Games for Entertainment and Learning Lab thanks to support from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.

I'd rather contract smallpox than play this game.

If it was a smallpox sim, I'd be all over it like an itchy rash.

The one time I accepted food from settlers, I did wind up with dysentary. Big Grin However, you run into a number of settlers who are kind and helpful. The game covers some policies that had a positive impact on native communities. There's just more negative info to share.

The game does a great job of keeping things fun and providing some comic relief while also demonstrating how often treaties changed, sharing basic knowledge on historical events, tribes, etc. More educational but also more fun than Oregon Trail, in my opinion.
