If you need to avoid tax, based on the last 1TB deal experience, make an offer of 40 and seller should automatically accept. Last time I bought 2 of 1TB model from this seller and the sender name is mydigitaldiscount so I think this eBay seller is the same as the Newegg third-party seller.

Confirming that your eBay route works. It is not letting me rep you again though so a big thanks is all I can give.

How much did you offer for the 1 TB to get automatic acceptance? They still have some.

Edit: never mind got my brain unstuck and did a proper search and found the entry 150.00 should do it,

Another confirmation that eBay works for $40, but they may accept even less than that.

Let me point out that the 256GB SKU of the SM961 (a capacity that is not sold for the retail analogue 960 Pro) uses 2D/planar MLC and not 48L 3D MLC. On page 5 of the datasheet [hammer-drive.com]: SKUs with "P" are PC/Client and use 2bit MLC (not VNAND 2bit MLC) and further "E" is 6th generation planar.

This is done because the controller (Polaris) is 8-channel, so to get saturation you need 16 dies (2 CE/channel). The 2D MLC is 64Gb (8GiB/die) so therefore, 16 * 8 = 128GiB ("GM"). The 256GB SKU is also 64Gb with two 16DP packages (32 * 8 = 256GiB) because Samsung did not make 128Gb MLC ("GL"). This is not necessarily a bad thing - Samsung's planar MLC is more robust than their 48L 3D MLC.

I made an offer for $40 and it accepted immediately, thanks! Next time I try putting in less and see what happens.

I made a lower offer of 38, and seller gave me a counter offer of 39.99. So I guess you can lower one cent.

The seller is not budging below $39.99 on eBay.

This is now available again by the same seller for that price at Newegg but with tax.

I do think this one is arguably the best for the money at the moment if 256 GB is sufficient (and it is for great many uses) as a combination of endurance, speed, low power consumption and thin enough (it is one-sided) for most laptops. And it is compatible OOB with Macs and Hackintoshes.

Not sure how good the heat spreader is. Anyone tried a third party heat spreader? These things do thermal throttle on sustained operations.
