I bought this brand new on pre-order back in December, I've owned the laptop since about January. Most of my time is spent spinning up virtual machines in virtual box, doing pen testing, watching video lectures, typing papers, other school related tasks.

The good:

Attractive laptop with the 'circular' metal finish
Great over all screen as far as total brightness and color reproduction
Very thin, very light, the small bezel is just awesome.
Comfortable keyboard with decent feedback
Battery life is pretty good for my usage at about 7.5 hours.
Seems to stay cool for my usage.
Plays Skyrim fairly well.

The bad:

Bad audio quality out of the built in speakers.
The touchpad is extremely frustrating. Every so often it just won't function, wait about 5 seconds and it's good again.

FWIW I had a similar issue (not the same though) on a Lenovo laptop and I found that it was a really bad interaction between touchpad drivers and windows keyboard shortcuts. If you committed a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl-x for example) then the touchpad would stop responding for ~2 seconds. Lenovo didn't really take my support ticket seriously so nothing came of it.

There is a 'soft spot' on the bottom of the chassis where there is clearly no internals to back against (hollow space) that has obvious flex and noise so that is very frustrating, I'll be opening a case with Asus soon to try to address this.

Overall I'm happy with my purchase, particularly the performance/portability/battery/screen.

This is in the ultralight category of notebooks along with a modicum of decent performance with all solid state drive medium sized at 512gb; decent enough performing Nvidia 1050 video card for all but the hardcore gamer; price at just under $1,200 is a decent price given the performance for the bang for the dollar; its one of the better deals that I have seen till something comes along that does it better than Asus offering.

Which retailers run Asus deals at 30% off? Is it during Black Friday, or during another sales event?

This might be the lightest 15.6 laptop with a gtx1050. Would have been good to see it paired with a H series processor though.

Still got my eye on the new Zephyrus GA502. 120Hz panel, 1660Ti, but an admittedly worse processor in the 3750H. IAt the same price, I'd rather take the GPU horse power over the CPU, but to each their own

The i7 8565u for being 15w tdp vs 8300h at 45w is pretty close benchmark wise

If display size isn't an issue, I would say go with MateBook.

Reason :

3K resolution Touchscreen, 100% sRGB color gamut and 450 nits of brightness.

I'm sure you can find matebook below $1200

At this price point, I expect Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C charging.
