Since this has transcoding built in, I would have thought this would be the far more interesting deal today. Maybe with harddrives being as cheap as they are, transcoding isn't as big a deal anymore.

The primary benefit of the Extend is that its transcoding saves network bandwidth. In theory, this makes it easier to stream without pauses and hiccups.

I have been waiting for a good deal on the Extend forever, and then one day, the price drops across the board! Even Amazon and Adorama have it at this price. Now I'm having second thoughts, because I wonder whether SiliconDust is dropping the price to make way for a new model.

Thank! I used the rakuten 15% off and saved a bit more ($110) this would be perfect if it supported Apple TV.

I've ditched the cable long time ago, had DirecTV NOW for a while, but they kept raising the price, so now I don't have anything, this would be good for some event.

Also have a NAS with Plex. Does their client still provides free guide?

Would also like to know the best type of unit for use with plex (with plex pass), regardless of unit used (fire stick, smart tv, etc).

i have 2 of these, they work great with my cheap weak nas for dvr.
(if you don't have a nas that can transcode, extend is the way to go)
i keep everything set at 720p to conserve wifi bandwidth at home.

i keep a small silent usb fan on them in hopes it extends their life,
as the heat sink cases do get warm to the touch.

I have this, if you want to stream this in your home on your iPad, or other TVs or use Plex.
This is the way to go. It's all transcoded by the hardware, uses less of your router bandwidth
I couldn't use the other HDhomerun units at all, too much buffering. This never buffers.

Looking thru the product info it mentions you can record programs. I could not find any info on how much you can record for later playback. It will work as a DVR ? How big is storage capacity?

Looking to get an HDHR. Plan is to have it upstairs with an antenna for best reception, and route it through a powerline adapter to router downstairs. Throughput on the powerline is over 800Mbps, do I need transcoding or would the Duo/Quattro be enough? TIA

This has no data storage. You have to network it to separate storage, like a computer.
