To make it clear, the $400 is good for 4 different phones. Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3a, and Pixel 3aXL. So if anyone thinks the 3a is not good enough and is willing to pay for the better phones, here is a chance.
For those wondering if the 3a is an upgrade from the original Pixel I'll highlight the things I personally think matter.
Brand New Battery
3 more years of Android OS upgrades
MUCH better camera
Higher future trade in value
Trading in a Pixel for a 3a will lose you unlimited original photo quality backups.
Performance is close to the same, with the 3a being slightly faster.
If you're a T-Mobile customer that plans to remain a T-Mobile customer, it's pretty much a no-brainer upgrade even accounting for the tax, activation fee (if any), and extra $80 for the Pixel 3a XL. The 3a trade if value along is worth more than the upgrade costs, making it better than free to trade in an original Pixel. It's profitable to upgrade.

You won't see the promotion listed anywhere on the receipt. The last section of the paperwork you received should say something about Device Recovery Program. That's where you'll see the info about the phone you traded in, and the up-front credit for the device (in the case of an original Pixel, $40). If you see that, you're good.
In about a day you'll see the promotion listed in your account. I had a hard time finding it at first. It's somewhere under the "Account" heading. You should see an option to show your promotions. If not, click on the specific line you upgraded, and then you'll see the option to view promotions. It'll be listed there. For me, it showed up the very next day (less than 24 hours). You won't see it today if you did the upgrade/trade-in today. Check tomorrow though and it'll be there.
According to posts here and on Reddit from people much more knowledgeable with the trade-in process, once the store accepts the trade-in you're all set. As mentioned above, you'll see the promotion listed in about a day and can then rest easy. I can't imagine once the promo is approved and on the account that there would be any issue. From what I understand, as long as the store accepts the phone, you're off the hook for any issues that may arise (like Assurant rejecting the trade-in from the store). IMHO, it's well worth the $20 upgrade charge to have an answer same-day about the trade-in instead of waiting a month to find out you're denied.
