This version is battery operated so you can install it most anywhere. but in my testing needs to be recharged about every 1-2 months, which does require taking it off its mount and plugging it in for 5-12 hours depending on the charger used and its amp rating.

The new version 2 has a removable battery pack to mitigate this downtime, but that will cost you about double currently, $169 for the base, $29 extra for an extra battery pack so you can hot swap them.

I love this thing. The charging is a hassle but you can buy a solar power faceplate that keeps it charged that the ring mounts to.

I have one and it works really well. The only thing it doesn't do is comment to 5ghz wifi. My router needs to be on the same side of the house to make it work.

If I have existing wiring, I won't need to charge it every few months, right?

Not necessarily. There is a secondary battery that isnt widely known. You have to replace that when it goes dead.

I don't have the email. Is this an in-store only deal?

Ring is supposed to be coming out with a new version called the Ring Door View Cam [ring.com] soon I think. It might be worth waiting for. It's most likely going to cost ~$200 so maybe out of the price range of people interested in the original Ring.

A buddy is wanting a WiFi video door bell but not in any hurry, is this a good deal or wait for a lower price or a different one?

You don't need to but it is worth to have it, especially if the yearly cost is around $30 only.
