Their website is terrible.. There's no easy way to find this deal by date, nor by stations.

Tried several different routes, and it's not giving any discount. Sorry, thumbs down from me on this "deal."

Thanks, just re-booked my upcoming trip for 50% less! I received the email from Amtrak, but ignored it until now.

Agreed. Their site is like an airline ticketing site from the early 2000's. No wonder they are hurting...

on a scale of 1-10 how big of a nightmare is travel by train?

I took a bus trip twice in my life and it was a horror show.
Once was an 8 hour ride from melbourne to adelaide australia with 2 guys behind me who never shut up.
Other time was a 50 mile ride from the airport to my town that took half a day because it stopped every 5 seconds.

Is train travel anything like that?

I rode from NY to baltimore a month ago on amtrak for the first time, took about 4 hours. wasnt bad experience overall but had I been able to drive it would have been cheaper and faster to drive.

Amtrak is really slow on long routes - expect to be stopped waiting for usage of the rail for a few hours at a time. But generally people are pretty nice and the seats are big and comfortable - at least on the tourist routes. Look up the specific route for more info (like whether the cars have more than two outlets...). The commuter routes are basically like most commuter trains, nothing to write home about. 2-5 on the nightmare scale depending.

I personally love it. Last month, I took a trip from DC to Chicago to Austin and back the same route. It took days but was amazingly relaxing. I did have the cheapest sleeper car.

I've used Amtrak one time for San Diego to Santa Barbara. The train was 45 min late to picking us up and broke down three times before reaching LA. After an hour wait getting it fixed again we set off and broke down for a final time in Simi Valley. They just turned the lights in the train off and we disembarked at the station. I was told they would reimburse our $100 uber ride from Simi Valley to Santa Barbara but they never did. We also missed our chartered overnight fishing trip which they also refused to reimburse.

Amtrak is a piece of shit company with shit tier trains. I'll NEVER ride one again.
