Yes, many higher grade headphones require more power to make them sound their best. There's a huge audiophile world you've yet to experience young one.

M50's are fairly efficient actually, really depends on the source, but don't think you need it for those headphones. If you are driving them through something weak like a game controller, then maybe they won't get loud enough, that's where you could benefit from an amp. Generally, an amp will give you a 'fuller' sound in addition to the obvious volume bump. Sound is very subjective though, get it if you are curious and interested in chasing 'better' sound. Probably not a must for M50's in my opinion, but maybe for a future upgrade if you head down that path. This is only the tip of the iceberg, this hobby can get really expensive.

Trying to look at the pictures, and it seems the pictures are wrong? Looks like this does not have bluetooth connectivity and the picture shows only 1x input jack. quick google search shows that it has 1x input and 1x output jacks.

Would this be... say... worth it... to get for yard work / connection to external speaker?

No. Because a bluetooth speaker would cover all that and be cheaper. This is meant for high end headphones that require an amp.

Very versatile little unit. It's a good beginner's step into headphones.

I want to preface that I'm a casual audiophile, I have the FiioO A1 at work and the more premium FiiO desktop version at home. So you won't be disappointed.

Would this be good paired with Philips SHP9500s? I would just be using it between my phone and the headphones.

Is your volume too low? If so, yes, this will help
