I'm curious, what happens if you go over your data limit on prepaid phones like this. Do they throttle you, or charge you per MB? If they charge you, can you set it not to use data past the limit?

I'm wondering if this phone would be good for my niece. She's at that age where she wants a phone but doesn't really have anyone to call. The minutes would be more than enough i think, but the data is where I'm concerned. She'd be using apps for sure, like video calling stuff and maybe would want some games. I'm not sure how badly those kill data when you don't have access to wifi.

The minutes/texts/data are like gas in your car. When you run out, you can't do it anymore. The totals are kept separate, so you can run out of them separately.

The phone I have (ZTE Max Duo) does let you shut off data once you reach a limit you set.

On the Tracfone site, when you buy your refill plan for the month, it has the option to buy extra data (and texts, if necessary).

You can also buy extra data separately, but it's a couple of dollars cheaper if you buy it with a plan.

$10 / GB alone
$8 / GB with a plan

Tracfone works excellent for students when they don't have to make too many calls.

It is working perfectly fine for my High school going son. Phone with Talk/Text/Data for less than $9 per month. I renew Texts for another 1000 for only $5.

I don't see much difference in specs between this and the other TF phone+plan deals in the $80-$100 range. Is this really a better phone?

This one comes with Android 8 if that makes a difference. Tracfones don't get software updates so it's best to get one with the latest software they offer.

I average about 13GB on my tablet per month with light usage of; a few apps, 2 small games, and fairly rare YouTube vids of a few minutes each. 4-5GB of that amount is used on Google doing simple research of products that come up on SD or other things. I highly doubt that 1.5GB is going to be enough for a whole year for her.

Tracfone is not good for heavy data users. If you use more than a couple gigs of data per month there are better carriers (like redpocket)

You would need to do such things on wifi on tracfone.

I agree that data limit is quite low on tracfone deals.
However, you can buy data at $10/GB.

Completely agree about the wifi. I only responded with the numbers because he mentioned that there would be times she wouldn't have it. $10 per gig could get costly without access to WiFi, particularly for a "typical" teen.

She would need to get games which can work offline.
With a system like Tracfone, you have to be very data conscious. The way I do it is I turn my data off, so that apps arent sneaking data in the background. I only turn data on when *I* want to access data.
