I'm giving a thumbs up, if you absolutely positively just want the basic streaming options you get out of the box, this is a good buy.

However, no KODI. It cannot be installed on a Roku. So, if you have even a small notion of going the.... more complete library route of Kodi, I'd recommend against this box.
There is plex support though (which I haven't used yet).

Are the complaints about the remote that they eat batteries, connection issues, or just die? Seem to be mixed diagnosis reading reviews.

Does the Premiere+ with WiFi remote seem to have similar issues?

I assume the IR remotes don't have as many problems.
I really haven't seen these problems, we have had 2 of these for 18 months after years of Roku 2 and 3. Batteries last a satisfying amount of time for us. These have great remotes too with volume and power integrated to control your TV.

These are good for the old people in my life, not as easy as channel up/down though if that is what they are used too. I would say xfinity customers should find it easy though.
Notably, there is no Fox News if you have one of those old people. CNN has a great app though, also smaller players like Newsy and Sky News.
Don't I have to subscribe service to say Comcast in order to get the paid channel like CNN? Or I can get it free with this Roku device?

I use a relative's account for CNN access, but I think they have some of the content access able without any log in. Sorry, not certain, and I'm not at home to check.

Anyone have any recommendations for a stick with a microsd that plays local content? Seems the only way I found is with a fire stick using a OTG cable or maybe an android stick.

I used to rely on local playback too until I tried plex (or kodi). I have been extremely happy with plex and would never go back to local playback.

Isn't the fire TV 4k on the other thread better than this?
imo no, because Amazon really restricts content, whereas Roku doesn't really care what content you have.

The Roku has a built in app and I'm sure there are more apps that let you play local content. I watch stuff on my NAS using the Roku all the time.

Don't you use a tablet for this purpose in the minivan? I can't imagine that you put a full TV/monitor in the minivan...
