This particular printer has the instant ink deal on Amazon unlike the 5055 printer model. I link to Amazon for the deal because of Smile.Amazon, but you can get the same deal on HP's store if you prefer ordering from manufacturer. Link is at bottom of description!

When ordering from store.hp.com, you get a free $5 instant ink prepaid code added to your cart automatically.

Am I crazy or is this printer asking me to pay to print a page after buying the damn thing?

That's what it sounds like from reading reviews. I thought Instant Ink was optional. I'll have to look into it.

Edit: Apparently the program IS optional but if you have an Instant Ink ink cartridge in your printer you have to be a paying member of the program or they will disable your printer until you get a standard retail ink cartridge

No what actually happens is that HP has Instant Ink-specific cartridges that require you to be a part of the program. It says it in the item description that I copy and pasted to this deal page.

So when you opt-out, you have to buy brand new non-Instant Ink cartridges. Printer still works, but it's basically useless if you have non-instant ink cartridges.

Isn't that what I said?

Also thank you for using an Amazon Smile link.

No. HP does not disable the printer. The printer itself is just unable to continue because continuing would mean HP would charge you due to utilizing the Instant Ink-only cartridges.

They ship these printers with Instant Ink cartridges so when people don't want to pay for that service (or otherwise become restricted from it), they have to buy completely new ink cartridges which are booty expensive.

Since ofc people want to save money, people buy third party ink cartridges. The people in the reviews are saying that the printer halts printing if it detects a counterfeit ink cartridge.

It's a pretty shitty scheme. Overall, my best recommendation is for people to only buy these HP printers if they have no intention of going outside the Instant Ink restrictions.
