I currently have subcriptions to both MT and C&D. I think preference is very subjective, but I think the C&D articles are more interesting - I like the writing, and the content, and the tone.

Very good deal, I also prefer C&D but for $0.25/issue might as well have both!

How can magazines make any money at prices like these? No wonder they're shutting down left and right.

Higher readership = more they can charge for advertising.

they can't and often high rate base magazines don't see the $$ that agents such as discount magazines charge for a subscription. and agents that charge unapproved pricing like this drive down the CPM the magazine can charge for advertising if the title is audited.

Very interesting, so what is the point of discount magazines? What do they benefit from this and how is the "deal" generated?

Publishers typically don't benefit, and it is hard to shut down places like discount magazines without shutting down all agents.

discount magazines is not a legit agent. Legit Agents will allow companies like discountmags to fulfill through them.

Publishers will contract agents for a certain amount of subs with a minimum offer and allow the agent to keep all of the revenue collected but they cannot offer a lower term than what is specified by the publisher.

Agents will then allow companies like discountmags to acquire subs and fulfill through them.

Publishers can trace an order through discountmags and then can threaten the agent that allowed them to submit the subscription to shut them down if they continue to do business with them.

the agent will usually cut them off, but then discountmags just switches to another agent, it is shady.

Thanks for the info, i love learning this kind of thing. I was about to subscribe to this mag for $10 for 1 year on amazon but I just went through this deal and got 4 years for $12. that won't even cover their cost of shipping and printing. let alone the overhead of staffing.
