I just moved from the essential phone to pixel 3a. I wanted to like the essential phone, but the camera was so bad even with the updates. And my touch screen on it started getting wonky, and scrolling was not great, as well as subpar haptic feedback. Now that I list all those things, I realize the phone pretty much sucked. I had the LG v20 prior to that, and absolutely loved it. It's just getting a little bit long in the tooth at this point. But the audio was so good from it and I liked the tap to wake and second screen. The pixel 3a pretty much checks those boxes and has a top notch camera. Moral of the story is of you are considering these, get the v20.
Interesting. I have the Essential phone and considered moving to the Pixel 3a because I have an occasional issue with ghost touches on my Essential (but haven't had the other issues you mentioned after software updates). However, when I compared the two phones side-by-side, the Pixel seemed like a step backwards to me rather than an upgrade. The plastic body vs the metal/glass of the Essential made it feel cheap, plus it has a lower resolution and smaller screen, bigger bezels, and less storage. In the end I decided I would live with the ghost touch issue for now then consider upgrading to a flagship phone in the future. Don't get me wrong, the Pixel 3a definitely has some improvements over the Essential, most notably the camera, but the camera on the Essential has been good enough for me in most situations. Then again, this is just my opinion of the two phones after using the Pixel 3a for about 10 mins in the store, so if you end up loving the Pixel 3a over the Essential, I would like to hear about it, especially if the ghost touch issues end up causing me to throw my Essential phone out a window Smilie.

As for this deal, from my experience, if you get a properly working Essential, it is definitely worth the $140 price. However, that could be a big if because as many have said, their hardware QA seemed to be sub-par.

Typing this from my V20 as we speak. And have entire family on V20s. Here are my 2 cents.

Agreed with many, stupid camera glass breaks easily. To date have had 2 phones with this issue. And til this day can not fine a true working fix. All the replacment glass on eBay and Amazon that I have tried are junk.

The battery is crap. Have to constantly charge the phone.

Ghosting is a real issue if you leave screen on for a time like in use of GPS (Waze, etc).

LG firmware upgrades are lacking. On both ATT (android 8.1) and Sprint (8).

Now for some positives ... it allows you to swap out batteries. None of this sealed battery crap. So if you can find a good battery, then you are in luck.

The DAC sound is good. You do hear a difference. But it is not life changing.

Decent screen size.

Haven't had any issues with overheating.

The LG v20 was an ok phone when it came out. But today it is what it is ... a dated ok phone.

Now if I could find a more up to date phone for a decent price (below $300) with removable battery. I would kiss this good bye.

I've always debated on these upgrades. I consider myself frugal. But I eventually went from S7 to S9 on the cricket port which is $279. The battery life jump from the old worn S7 to new S9 has been crazy. Plus even with some cache cleaning etc, S7 was slow for android auto. S9 cleared this all up. If you aren't on cricket you can buy unlock codes for it etc.

If you decide to do it I can explain how I made a port number on ebay for $5.00. You basically buy imeid from ebay for $2.00 and create a prepay on tmobile with $3.00. Then you can port online without even walking into a store. It was painfree. You may have to eat the $55 monthly though if you don't want to use cricket.

Lol. Funny we have such different opinions. Maybe I got a bum ph-1 and you got a whack v20

I'd have to disagree. The battery on the V20 is terrible, it overheats, the camera glass is easy to break, the screen has a yellow tinge, but the biggest thing is the software is pretty bad and LG never pushes any updates, so you're stuck with shitty software forever.

In my opinion:

PH-1: best specs and newest device if you can handle the ok camera and sluggish touchscreen

Z Play: if you need a battery champ (I would get 8 to 9 hours SoT with heavy usage on terrible signal from that thing)

V20: if you're ok with rooting and ROMing to make the best out of the device, because this thing needs it badly. (and I'm not even sure the model they're selling can be BL unlocked).
I haven't had issue with my V20 batteries, best thing is they are removable, yet about a year ago I switched to the ZeroLemon 10,000mAh battery and never looked back.

Owning a PH-1 couple months now, I have experienced it's share of up and downs but I would say it's the best phone especially for the price. Having both the LG V35 and PH-1, I've notice my PH-1 battery is draining faster and some software bugs. Not really note worthy as the people in this post has set it out to be. The camera though, that's kinda true. The PH-1 is the real gem in this list.

Does the V20 need to be unlocked before it can be used with Tello?

I'd say the price is very reasonable for a 3 year old phone, but far from being good deal.

I loved the essential ph-1 except I had nonstop signal issues. Those were never fixed through updates. I was on AT&T though so YMMV.
Have to agree here... My PH-1 had very sub par signal strength. Also on AT&T network. Also had touch screen issues.

I would say the same thing after owning my PH-1 since batteries degrade over time but mine cannot be replaced. On my V35, the quad dac is one of the best features of the phone. It's something I wish phones these days would pay attention to. Instead we end up losing the headphone jack.
