I just moved from the essential phone to pixel 3a. I wanted to like the essential phone, but the camera was so bad even with the updates. And my touch screen on it started getting wonky, and scrolling was not great, as well as subpar haptic feedback. Now that I list all those things, I realize the phone pretty much sucked. I had the LG v20 prior to that, and absolutely loved it. It's just getting a little bit long in the tooth at this point. But the audio was so good from it and I liked the tap to wake and second screen. The pixel 3a pretty much checks those boxes and has a top notch camera. Moral of the story is of you are considering these, get the v20.

had my v20 for a few years. it never overheats. i love it! never had a problem with the screen, then again, i have a thick tpu case around it so it doesnt crack when it falls. its one of the best phones i have owned so far. there is no other newer phone with a removable battery, headphone jack, microsd slot, and IR sensor. the built in FM radio chip is also a nice bonus.

I'd have to disagree. The battery on the V20 is terrible, it overheats, the camera glass is easy to break, the screen has a yellow tinge, but the biggest thing is the software is pretty bad and LG never pushes any updates, so you're stuck with shitty software forever.

In my opinion:

PH-1: best specs and newest device if you can handle the ok camera and sluggish touchscreen

Z Play: if you need a battery champ (I would get 8 to 9 hours SoT with heavy usage on terrible signal from that thing)

V20: if you're ok with rooting and ROMing to make the best out of the device, because this thing needs it badly. (and I'm not even sure the model they're selling can be BL unlocked).

I would potentially be interested in the Moto, but the battery swelling issue is for real. Not sure.

Do the Verizon phones still have the locked/wonky APN setups like they used to?

ie you can enter an APN but it wont do MMS or text messaging wont work w LTE and you have to drop down to 2-3G for it to work?

Or are they just like any other phone now and its not an issue?

V20 is still a great phone. Got a couple for my parents last year. Ghosting is an issue though.

I formerly used a Moto Z Droid (not play version, but likely similar experience) on Cricket with no issues. MMS and full functionality.

Keep it mind it doesn't have all the LTE bands (maybe not even 12), generally it was fine. Technically Cricket also auto configures APN so I'm not sure about other carriers they don't.
