Ok, I have Marpacs. Soundscreen, dohm, dohm basic, letrofan white noise, used my phone with a few different apps and multiple different fans. Fans dry you out when you sleep, even when they aren't blowing on you. Phone speakers ar meh. They just can't produce the sound range with a tiny little speaker. The soundscreen is the one used nightly. It has top and bottom adjustments that change pitch and volume. It vibrates a little on high after 12 years of daily use. I haven't taken it apart to try to fix it. The Dohm is just a new version of the soundscreen that has only been used by me once or twice. The dohm basic has less adjustments but same essential design. The Lectrofan white noise machine has multiple fan sounds and white noise that has multiple pitch adjustments. The Lectrofan can get way louder than the marpacs. Sound range is more extensive also. Has thin little wires going from the power adapter and doesn't feel like it can take much abuse compared to the soundscreen that has fallen to the floor like 50 times. If I had to pick one to mask sounds, it would be the lectrofan white noise.

I say "Alexa, Tell Sleep Sounds to play Airplane Noises" and it works great, it's a nice deep rumble sound. Much better than white brown or pink noise I think. I just bought this to try it, I"m hoping it sounds more real as the Amazon one sounds like it's coming from a speaker, it's fine and I use it every night but it's not perfect. On a side note, there's no way to program a routine using the Sleep Sounds App, Amazon just doesn't support it. So annoying
Yeah it is annoying. I couldn't believe that wasn't an option on echo so I keep a google home in my bedroom just for the night time routine feature was does have sleep sounds.

We've got one of these in our bedroom. My wife had a Dohm initially, which generates the noise "naturally" via a fan with some vents in it, but she (and I) prefer this one. It's definitely got a white noise setting, but there are something like a dozen other settings, some of which are reminiscent of cruising in an aircraft or something similar.

The speaker is nice, considering. We prefer it over the dohm, and it's more handy than messing around with a bluetooth speaker and a phone or even asking Google to make white noise on our Home speaker.

Unfortunately, Alexa and google devices also listen and record anything after they are triggered. Too many privacy concerns to keep one of those in the bedroom.
F it, I'm buying one. Can't put a price on a good nights sleep. If I don't like it I'll return it and go back to use smart speakers.

I love love love my micro. It fits in the palm of your hand, and has really nice low tones like fans/HVAC systems (high pitch white noise is aggravating to me) and is way louder than I thought it would be from such a small speaker. I take it with me when I travel and I would buy another in a heartbeat. It also works as a bluetooth speaker, though I've never tried to use it.

One tip, is mine wasn't charged so I would plug it in and after a minute it would fade to silence. Turns out the battery was so low that it was triggering the fade out (really nice feature), so make sure to charge it for like 20 minutes before you intend to plug it in and use it for sleep.

These have "fan" in their names but non of them are actually mechanical white noise machines? They are all electronic white noise? I am sorry I don't think I can go back to electronic ones, for those you have your phones/tablets/smart speakers etc, don't need another unless they have real fans in them. It's a completely different type of white noise if you never had actual fan type white noise.

You guys do a lot of talking in the bedroom, if there was one place I'd put my alexa/google, it would be definitely the bedroom. Not a lot of talking going there, if they want to listen to our flatulence and snoring, be my guest. It would be interesting if I sleep-order something from amazon though, that would suck.. And during "intimate" moments, you can always throw a towel over it.. Smilie

You guys got me thinking, I think I'll put one in my bedroom.

Just speak very broken English or with very strong accent at home on purpose so that the machine won't be able to recognize your speech 😂

I was just listening to a Clark Howard podcast yesterday and he said if you have an Alexa in your bedroom remove it.

Here is a link to the Sound Screen which looks like my Marpac Dohm Classic from the picture:

Yeah, my 2 older Marpac-Dohm Classic's are still going strong BUT I never really got into them after trying them over the years. You really can't adjust the volume on them (in meaningful way), yeah... you turn the 2 panels to open more holes so it gets a little louder, but it's the same basic fan sound. It's nice that I have them, but, for me , it doesn't touch me in the right places. Smilie

The Lectofan model that is selling for 19.99 in this thread actually does "touch" me in a "good" way, and placement can make a big difference . When I'm in bed, I can reach above me to change the volume and settings to find right setting to "buzz" me in nice way. I can control volume and "fan' or "brown noise" options to find right one. I think it's important when going from one sound to the next to actually experiment with making sound louder or softer because the sounds are not tied to equal sound levels. Doing that helped me a lot. A sound might not work if it's too soft but works louder for room. Also, if I have a fan going in the room, choosing a different sound on the Lectofan might work better. I'm finding a deep sound on the Lectofan gives the AC vibration sound (at night I feel like the AC is on) and the actual fan in my room that is going compliments it with the breeze aimed at me. Helps me go to sleep really fast.

  • works offline

I worked in a law office where these were used constantly. Apparently I suffer from a disorder that causes extreme irritability around these machines. I highly suggest anyone with diagnosed metal disorders be very wary of these devices. Low sounds, hums, etc will cause me to hallucinate or overall just become a irritable person. Long term exposure especially when sleeping can literally drive some people to do insane things.

Took me a very long time to actually figure out what was triggering the episodes and I hope if anyone else has similar issues, this can help them also.
