So unless it's changed from my older hdhomerun they have a dvr service that costs but you are in no way locked into it. I use mine with plex as the dvr, basically this gives you the stream on your network you do what you want with it. Or use their service if you want something simple.
That's what I do as well. HDHomeRun Prime + PlexPass = DVR. I also use the native HDHomeRun app to view channels. Got the free two months of DVR, but it's not as nice as Plex, so I'll be cancelling before the $35/year kicks in.

Any trick to using the Google code on separate accounts? I've tried two different accounts and credit cards and it keeps saying the card didn't go through even though a pending charge shows up on the account.

edit: I was able to order using a one-time card number. It must track payment methods that match on accounts.

Every DVR service charges, compiling the TV listings isn't free, I agree thought that the title is misleading.
Actually, you can get free tv listings, albeit it's a little cumbersome to set up. You can also link it into apps like NextPVR for free. However, I have yet to find anything that is as streamlined and simple as Windows Media Center. I can't bring myself to pay for a service that was once free and worked very well (WMC). One of the worst things of upgrading to Win10.

This is all OTA channels, rather than the HDHomeRun Prime, which you mount a cablecard in.

Since Windows 10 eliminated Windows Media Center support, has anyone successfully migrated to a new software platform that can record _all_ channels off of a cablecard? My HDHomeRun has been sitting in the closet and I just surrendered to the world of cable boxes, but I'd like to eliminate them again.

Wait, this is a OTA DVR and they still charge for the DVR service? What advantages does this have over the other products that does not require a subscription like my Tablo?

I think this thing is meant to interface with Plex so you can stream TV anywhere you stream from Plex.

I've been using plex for a year now and it works ok. Not as good as WMC. You have to have a plex pass which is $5/ month or $120 lifetime. The drawback of plex is every device uses a tuner even if watching the same channel. Can't watch the show while it's recording. Can't wake the computer up to record record shows automatically.

The benefit:
A lot more device support like Apple and android phones and tablets, roku, fire TV.

Can watch live TV on the go or share your TV with others.

Plex media libraries are a lot better.

This is why all of my computers are still W7. WMC7 is one of the best HTPC software programs out there. They removed it because they wanted to make the XBOX the HTPC hub. (They sell a rebranded Hauppauge 955Q as an Xbox tuner for XB1). Ticks me off. It also ticks me off that Plex doesn't play nice with .wtv files or ISO rips. So now I have dueling HTPC setups and it's messy. But cheap.

My Amazon Fire Recast does not have a monthly fee.

I'm very tempted to pick this up. Just got a new antenna to see if my old Hauppauge 950Qs will play nice with Plex. This would make things a lot more convenient. For sub-50, I might have to bite.

Yeah, I held on to Win7 until just a few months ago, when I felt I needed to upgrade to Win10, so I didn't do it last second before Win7 updates are discontinued. I'm wondering how long WMC tv listings will be supported once they retire Win7.

There is definitely a gap in the market for a well designed, easily integrated, streamlined DVR program, which is FREE. Maybe that last requirement is the problem. laugh out loud

Mind you, if you are willing to invest in the ecosystem, Fire TV's and a Recast is probably the most streamlined approach (OTA only). That said, I use an HDHomerun Prime with Fire TV's, Nvidia Shields, Plex, etc.
